Perhaps, mine was considered the better school in town and i knew plenty who were having sex (most of which were in relationship), including the most intelligent girl in the school who was a very high achiever..

..i don't recall any pregnancies though. I used to go with my friends to the drop in clinic that was held at lunchtimes hwen they got their pills and condoms.

I was a nice middle class girl in a nice school in a nice town and lost my virignity at 15 - in the summer holidays after year 11 and certainly by 6th form we were all at it. Hubby says public school girls are the worst.

I left an independant at sixteen, and after a year out went to a local college. I don't think one environment was better or worse worse but, I think one was more confident and prepared and had fewer opportunities on average.

Dh, not British, was a bit horrified by how 'easy' all his peers were at university here. He liked sex, but also picked up the pieces with lots of female friends at uni which unsettled him, not because he thought they should not be having sex but that he thought it should be an experience that was less full of angst.

I am still to this day shocked that when I, as a 17yr old and very innocent-looking girl, asked to have the pill the Dr. just handed me over the prescription without another word. "Uh.... when do I take them?"

And that some prescribed medicines and some over-the-counter herbal remedies will reduce its effectiveness, as will vomiting and diarrhoea.

And that using vaseline, hand creams and baby oil as lubricants will start to dissolve the condom and increase the risk of it splitting. Lipstick has the same effect.

I am 30 - and i did go to a catholic girls grammar school - but lots of my friends just went to the local secondary school.

I know it's easy to say this but it makes me feel really uneasy to think my 16 year old child could be having sex under my roof, I don't think even I who is pretty modern in my thinking would actually allow that and yes, I know it means they do it anyway but still, I really would be on top of that, ie, not letting her stay over too much etc. You haven't done wrong, you were trying to help and advise and getting the pill is easy so I'm wondering if this girl is actually mature enough to be having sex, hate to say it but i doubt very much condoms are getting regularly used, I would be worried about an impending pregnancy.
