    no but
i can see about 15 differnt faces in my curtains - ,..its the most easily recognised bunch of shapes from any given random selection

I do that too :rotfl: and it's always the most ugliest face you can imagine. Then I focus on it and can never get back to sleep.

Anyone reading this can say what they like, especially the sceptics. But whatever you think, you should know that I am an ex-seaman, miner, soldier and workshop foreman. A practical man in all respects, with a hard life behind me and disabilities to deal with. I do not frighten and I will stand up to anything or anyone that confronts me.

As a child, my grandfather, born in 1876, treated all his grandchildren as friends. In
particular, myself and a cousin, both readers. I thought the world of him, but we lived two counties away eventually.

One night, when I was 9 years old, I woke in my bedroom and saw my granddad at the end of my bed. There he was, dressed in his usual 3 piece, pinstripe suit. He smiled at me and just faded away. I looked at my "Mickey Mouse" clock (anyone remember them?) and it was 3:35 am. I went back to sleep and no, I was not dreaming.

Next morning I went down to breakfast and told my parents that I had seen granddad at the end of my bed at 3:35. They smiled indulgently, as I later smiled at something my own children may have said. Later, there was a knock at the front door and my dad went to answer it. He came in and wordlessly handed my mum a telegram, a look of shock on his face. Mum read the telegram (remember them?) which was from my uncle "Father died at 3:30 am today."

As I say, I am unbothered by any reactions to this. I only tell this perfectly true story because I know that there really are things in this world which cannot be explained by rational means. The twist to the story, is that my cousin had the exact same experience, at the same time. Her parents also received a telegram. The one thing we both knew was that the granddad we loved was saying goodbye. We also knew that he would never, ever, hurt us. His widow, much-loved Gran, lived on for another 22 years, and gran was a real live Roma, born in a caravan in the West Country in 1878. She saw no problem with what we cousins experienced and did not try to explain it. But she did give us a piece of advice, if we ever came across what she called 'The Others': if having any experience such as the OP has had, in any house, don't be afraid. The dead have lost any ability they may have had, to hurt anyone else. Only the the living hurt the living. The other advice was to enter the room, or rooms, where there is a problem, and loudly say "You do not live here anymore! This is MY house now!" it worked at my daughter's 250 year old cottage.

My big brother also had an experience, years after Granddad died. He had two boys at the time and I spent a lot of time at their home, as big bro was 17 years older than me and the boys (now sadly gone) were more kid brothers than my nephews. They were in bed, we were all downstairs, when there was a series of sliding, crashing noises and the boys woke up screaming. Bro ran to the sttairs, I was following. We could not get up the stairs! It was as if a wall was in front of us, we could go back but not forward. Then it stopped and we both fell onto the stairs. When we got to the boys' bedroom, the huge, heavy old wardrobe had moved away from the wall and the 3 drawers were hanging out. Apparently they had been sliding back and forth in the wardrobe, then the wardrobe moved forward on its own. The kids were terrified and the following day, the family asked for a move. Both my house and big bro's, were NCB Colliery estate houses, as both he and dad were miners. The estate was built between 1926 and 1928.

Not until some months later did my brother discover that, many years before, in the late '20's, some guy whose family had left him, hung himself there and was not found for days.

The reaction to these stories will not bother me one bit. I know what I saw on both occasions, but one thing I have found out about the few sceptics who encounter something like that, is that it scares them more than someone whose mind is open. So scoff away, it does not affect me in the slightest.

OP, I hope that your life is now peaceful and you are enjoying country life. I have always lived in a village, in the present beautiful Lincolnshire village for 10 years now . I hope you grow to love your place as much as we love ours. Just remmeber, the dead can only frighten, they cannot physically harm.

That's a lovely Victorian Gothic style house - if yours is anything like that you're a very lucky woman! Certainly houses of that period don't have that light, spacious feel of, say, Georgian era houses. They tend to use lots of dark wood for instance which can make a house feel oppressive. Of course the owners have done all the classic things to make it seem even more oppressive - dark patterned carpets and dark ceilings.

It's a style of architecture I feel can be a bit hard to get your head round because it goes against the 'light and airy' mantra we get preached these days.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth Horatio!

I consider myself quite a rational person but I had an experience shortly after my Grandmother died that I have never had before or since, and one which I cannot explain away rationally.

OMG! Did anyone else see the face reflected in the cooker splash back?

The "face" is caused by several reflections from the window to the right, the net curtains, and the shiny kitchen worktops. Sorry to burst your balloon!

  • hi omnasia - i apreciate your fear of a creepy house - we once - when poverty beat everything else - lived in a house where the previouse five inhabitants had been murdered - in the recent rather than far past - and it was one of the least creepy houses i have lived in !!!!

I am 100% absolutely definitely certain that dead people don't come back and 'visit' the living.

I've never believed they do, but a friend of mine was completely convinced and had a priest do an exorcism for the poltergeist she thought was hiding her stuff (she was losing her stuff, mostly) and it drove her mad that I didn't believe her, she tried everything to convince me. We had many a long debate on the issue and neither of us ever budged.

She died a few years ago. If there was any way she could have come back to prove me wrong and gloat there's no way she'd have missed the opportunity. Sadly, she's just gone. :(

I'm open minded on the subject of spirits and ghosts etc.

    My question is this.

When people go to spiritualists etc, why are all the message that they receive from the 'other side' so mundane? Like 'Auntie Doris' false teeth are down the back of the sofa'. Why do we never hear what the other side is really like? That's what I'd really want to know, not the whereabouts of misplaced household items!
