OP there is no such thing as ghosts or the afterlife. To believe so just shows irrationality and immaturity.

tell that to the millions of people who believe in God and an afterlife.

Cartesian dualism postulates that there is a mental reality and a physical reality. Newton developed the physical reality in the laws of physics which basically means that everything can be measured, tracked and accurately predicted from the Big Bang. No observer is necessary. But, quantum mechanics has discovered that observers do make a difference and that maybe Decartes has a point with his theory that the mental and physical realities exist and interact with each other in the brain. If you look into quantum theories you will find that it could be perfectly allowable for us to have both a brain and a mind. The mind existing separately to the brain and maintaining a cohesive structure allowing it to interact with other brains post mortem. Thus allowing for the possibility of not just ghosts but mediumship and reincarnation as well. Planck, Shrodinger and a few others.

    And breathe!

  • OP, I just wanted to say don't worry.
I've had varied odd experiences over the years.
8 years ago we moved into a very very old cottage near the beach on a welsh island miles from anywhere. DH doesn't believe in ghosts but on one of the earlier nights there something happened to change his mind.
We were in bed and it was pitch black. I heard the click of an old fashioned door latch in the corner of the room where there was no door, a noise I can only describe as a shushing noise came over to the bed ( I sunk down well under the covers) and it 'touched' my husband.
He swore, threw out his hands and sat up in bed.
That was the most direct contact we ever had but we took lots of photos of spirit orbs, saw strange shapes around the house and paddocks, had doors opening and closing, lights turning on and off etc etc. We constantly felt drained (not the usual tiredness you feel after moving but headaches and feeling drained of energy)
Found out the place had a reputation from a previous owner - who told us that no one slept in the bottom bedroom for very long.

However, the worst of the disruption was when we first moved in. Rather as if once they'd made their prescene known, met us they calmed down.

Life moved on. Occasionally they'd annoy us by opening doors or making strange noises in the night but it was if we had accepted one another.

I did a lot of research on the place and found out we were located on a ley line - or a ghost walk as they are alternatively called.

BTW I wouldn't recommend talking to them - as I heard it can encourage them. Only time I spoke directly to 'it' was when once I was on my own in the house and rushing in and out trying to look after the live stock.
I went into the bottom bedroom for something and as I was pulling something from under the bed heard something banging on the back window trying to get my attention.
I looked but there was nothing in sight. Too loud for a bird more like a human hand (and I lived up a mile long dirt track away from habitation with a dozen dogs who barked if anyone came near).
    I wasn't scared. I was FURIOUS.
I said, "You want to stop that banging and get some work done! I can find you some if you are bored!"

I never heard anything more that day and things stayed quiet-ish until we moved.

BTW I do agree that sometimes there are other reasons for things going bump in the night. Old houses are terrible for it and sometimes traffic can casue odd vibrations.

But please don't let it drive you away. It's probably not trying to scare you - think of it as an introduction. Bless the house if you feel better for having it done.
I've used burning sage to help clear odd atmospheres in the past.

Anyway I just wanted to say don't be scared. I know its difficult in the middle of the night when even small noises are amplified and you are desperate for a wee. But at the end of the day, as my mother used to say, its not the dead you should be scared of but the living

Can you put on some of your photos please. Would love to see them.

OP there is no such thing as ghosts or the afterlife. To believe so just shows irrationality and immaturity.

    It's odd how differently people see things. Take me, for example;
I've always considered people who try to impose their views and opinions on others, trying to state them as fact when they are no more than THEIR personal views and opinions, and then ridiculing anyone who may have differing opinions/experiences to be immature.

I've also considered it irrational to believe that simply because one person hasn't experienced something means that noone else has, can or ever will experience it either.

I prefer to take the (what I consider mature) approach that there are people in this world who may have experienced things which I haven't.

Do I believe in the paranormal? I'm not convinced one way or the other, and am all for scientific investigation and trying to discover a logical explanation, but if I was convinced either way I know that I would be able to realise that whichever view I held was nothing more than MY opinion, and not a fact, and not go on a public forum attempting to belittle others simply because they held a different view to myself, but then I've never had the type of personality that demands I have to go on forums and try to put people down in order to make myself feel superior.

People attempting to state their opinions as fact simply waste their own time. Noone (quite rightly) is going to suddenly forget their experiences or change their minds simply because someone on a forum told them they should.

If that approach makes me seem as immature to you as you appear to me then I'm more than happy to be seen as such.

OP, please do come back and tell us how it went with the vicar :)

Countless possibilities. None of us were there so how can you accurately say it was the paranormal?

    I don't think I have said that.

Life isn't like that. there is no paranormal this is simply it.

Our scientific knowledge is just the limit of what we know at the moment. To dismiss things you can't yet explain as nonsense is irrational. What if these sensations are the result of parallel universes somehow intruding on ours?

First, let me say thank you for the PM's, you know who you are.

This has certainly become quite a discussion and one that I would have been really intrigued by if I wasn't at the centre of it. I am quite open minded I think. The older I get, the more I realise how much I don't know so I would never be dogmatic and say there is no such thing as this, that or the other. My husband goes to church and is more into it than I am although I go quite a bit.

My view is that there are things we can't see - eg x rays, gamma rays(?) radio waves etc. The room I am sitting now is full of them. I can't see them but I believe they are there (well, I'm no scientist so maybe I'm not quite right but you get the idea). Someone said how do you prove love. So many things that we can't see, can't prove and just don't know. I think we are limited by our perception of the world as we see it. There are 3 dimensions, 4 if you include time but there may well be many, many more.

Where do you go when you die? Another dimension ? Sorry to say I have more questions than answers. I am happy to admit I just don't know. I am so grateful for the people who have posted with their experiences. I don't dismiss them. I am not so frightened now after hearing all these experiences.

The vicar phoned to say he was feeling ill again. He was just about to leave to come to us but was struck down with bad stomach pains again. I told him to go back to hospital because the same thing happened to me a few years ago and I ended up with a burst appendix and peritonitis. So, I don't know when he will be comimg now. He said to pray and he will too. He will send someone else if he can't make it and not to worry as he has come across these situations before.

So, feeling slightly better but last night, a picutre fell off the wall in my son's room. He said it woke him and made him jump but we are not jumping on that as a sign of anything, there could be any number of explanations.

Thanks again everyone, I can't tell you how much we appreciate your stories and support.
  • I think you need to pray AND get another vicar/pastor/priest/minister, as the original one is ill again. Don't leave it until he is better.

Why? Is it some sort of emergency? The OP and her family are not in any danger!

How is it remotely helpful to try and convince people they should be scared?

I have no intention of scaring them, they are already scared, so I was just saying to get it done quickly and not wait for the vicar's health to improve, then hopefully they won't be scared any more.
