A few years ago we stayed in a National Trust holiday cottage. All through the first night there were noises, footsteps in the bedroom, doors opening and closing by themselves. But I didn't care. There's more to be feared from the living than the dead.

The next morning there was a little old lady sitting on the bridge at the end of the driveway. "Those noises bee keeping you awake?" she said to me as I walked past. "Not at all" I replied. And I didn't hear any more noises after that.

I do believe there was some presence in the house causing trouble, but once they realised I didn't care they gave up trying.

I have never had the same feeling anywhere else, except close to a windfarm, so I think there may be something in the infrasound idea.

Ohh that's strange, my son and l went to a wind farm for a walk during the summer holidays one year, and I thought the place had the strangest, uneasy atmosphere. I couldn't get away from it fast enough.

Must be something in it right enough.

  • Don't have much time today but I felt I had to update on last night. We went to church for the midnight communion service. Came back and went to bed. I had the best night's sleep ever, slept like a log. Got up this morning feeling much better.

My son came down and I asked how he had slept. Not great was his reply as his two sisters had kept him awake with their constant chattering. I thought I would tell them off when they got up but they kind of took the wind out of my sails by saying 'what on earth did you and dad find to talk about half the night?'

WHAT ? We were in such a deep sleep, never heard a thing. They assumed it was us as their brother was in the room next door on his own.

I am clinging to the thought that maybe the house is like a radio and just transmitting sounds, voices whatever. I just don't know what to make of it.

The vicar is back home, apparently wasn't appendicitis so he said he will come tomorrow.....

Omnasia, I once had a house like that and I know what its like xxx.
Go to your local Spiritualist church and ask there - they have ministers too. An ordinary C of E vicar might be out of his depth and not know what to do.
Don't be scared - that will just wind everything up and make it all worse. Talk to whoever it is, but be firm and let them know this is your home now and you'd appreciate good manners and peace. Use lots of lamps, flowers and mirrors to keep the house light, and music .
And don't listen to silly people who make fun of it - it would be different if it happened to them. It happened to us once that's how I know. xxx
EDITED to add yes it might well be a memory and you can tune into it. Either way I never knew anybody hurt by a spirit, not ever. despite what Hollywood might want us to think!

I agree with this, whether it's a National Spiritualst Union (NSU) - or a Christian Spiritualist Church (CSS) - Mediums are so called because they act like radio receivers 'tuning in' to the right signal. A C of E Vicar however wise in Theology won't be able to communicate with the earth bound spirit, and help it on its way.

For someone who believes that there's nothing after death - it must be a shock when there is! What do I do, where do I go, what's that light? I'll stay here where I know.

I remember a talk by someone who did Spirit Rescues - remarked that he'd been called to a lady's house where there were about 19 different spirits there! Turns out she worked in Gwent Hospital in a Ward where many passed away - seems they didn't know what to do - so followed her home!

Incidentally, it seems some Christians when they 'pass' are so fixated about the 'Resurrection' that there stay with there grave!

A few years ago I was sharing a rented 5 bedroom house in london with some friends.

I constantly got the feeling of a presence in the house (particular when I was alone - the house was big), there was never any noises or movements etc. Never felt threatened by that feeling or presence etc. just that it was there sometimes.

I was telling everyone how I believed that a person had died in the house and it was an older female.

Someone I was living with in the house had access to the electoral roll + other sensitive data where they worked, and were actually able to confirm a woman from the house had died! :rotfl:

Very spooky, as i don't believe in a spiritual presence!

I believe that the spirit world is interwoven with this one, and they are around us, but not all the time. Like invisible friends for grown-ups lol. I don't mind being laughed at because one friend of mine did once and had reason to eat her words. It's a very personal thing and you cant really believe until it happens to you. I'm a Spiritualist.
  • It also might be a good idea to pray to God for the 'presence' to be taken away, while you' re waiting for the Vicar to call.

C of E Vicars ARE trained in this sort of thing, they are not unknowledgeable about the matter.

We lived in a 150 year old house for a few years and it always felt very creepy. Lots of strange noises, especially at night, of course. There was a built in cupboard with a lock on it that had what looked like fingernail scratches on the inside of the door.

OMG, that is horrible that a person might have been locked in there at some point.

Some people seem to think that something is only real after science has shown it to be so.
Stuff happens all the time around us - thunder and lightning were happening before scientists understood how they happened.
People have experiences - to dismiss them because we haven't got proof is unscientific. By all means, test the experience - check for drafts, floorboards creaking, tie a weight to the door handle and see if the door still opens or set up a camera.
For a quick fix, ask a priest to bless the house - if that works, maybe there is something operating at another level or maybe the placebo effect has relaxed the house owners so that they aren't worried about the creaks and groans. If it means sleeping well and enjoying the new house, does it matter?

I agree. I would have the house blessed or do it myself with burning sage/incense and ringing a bell. I know it sounds silly (:D) but it made me feel better when I did it to my own house when I moved in as I felt it had a bad atmosphere and I kept seeing dark things out of the corner of my eye. The people who lived here before us had a violent relationship so maybe that was a factor.

I have had some very weird experiences but I would be open to hearing a scientifc explanation but so many people have experiences with spirits, people seeing a vision of a loved one after they have died for example, that it seems patronising to dismiss what people feel they have heard and seen.
  • I can't remember the exact scientific terms, please excuse my post if it makes little sense.

There was an experiment done and they found that if a sound is played at a tone just under the range of human hearing it created a feeling of unease just like the one felt when supposedly in the prescense of a spirit. Also sounds that were normal could be perceived as paranormal because of this low tone or because people already believed the location was haunted.

Some hauntings are just memories, scenes replaying with no intelligence. some are trapped souls/ general ghosties who are either trying to do something like their story heard or contact people.

Then there are demons who can mimick people close to you/ children and they are evil and cause harm.

If you don't want to contact the ghost then don't. also if the spirit/demon whatever knows you are aware of them or trying to contact them. sometimes the activity can get worse/more frequent.

If you want to talk further pm me :) im no expert but I know a little about the paranormal.x
