I am a step-mother in law and when my one of my daugher in law's came to me and her dad for a loan, we agreed for her to arrange a loan in her dad's name. This was all sorted and she agreed to pay the £276 per month. This lasted for about 10 months but since then (about 2 years ago), we've had nothing so have had to pay this ourselves. I didn't ask for any details but if I'd known then what I know now I would have indeed asked more questions. She will never be out of debt because she cannot manage money - it's spent as soon as it's earned - and she must have spent a fortune over Christmas judging by the size of the pile of presents under her Christmas tree! Perhaps your MIL just wants to help, and she may be able to suggest ways you can save money. If you want her help, swallow your pride - it's cheaper than a bank loan and she won't take your house away if you default!!
  • I think Robynprincess has a good point - perhaps MIL thinks she can help, after all - a second/third set of eyes may see a way out of the problem.... ASK her why, think about it.

If she has lent you money before and now finds you need it again, I can understand her concerns and wish to be included in your financial budgeting. But I also understand your deisre for privacy.

If you are happy to be given helpful advice on your finances, then accept the loan but if it is going to cause family rifts, go to the bank and pay for your treasured privacy. Personally, I'd get a bank loan.
