Infrared Heating Panels

Hi,

Not sure if this is in the right place but here goes....

I stumbled across a website selling Infrared Heating Panels the other day and was wondering if anybody here knew anything about them? Are they really a lot cheaper to run than "normal" electric heaters and do you get the same (heat) benefit from them?

Here's a website showing what I mean. Website is just an example and not linked for any particular reason. Just found out I can't have links in my posts at the moment because I'm a newbie, so cut and paste!: -

funkyheat.co.uk/infrared-heating

I live in a flat that just has electric heaters, so I am always looking for ways to lessen the cost of heating the place.
It's taken me a lifetime to start looking after my money and now I'm addicted to doing it! :cool2:

As I said...that website was just an example.

Can you explain why their claims are clap trap?

  • All electric heaters are 100% efficient, whether :

    - oil filled
    - cheap convector
    - infrared
    - storage radiator
    - fan heater
    - chamotte clay

they are all the same. Heat propagates in only three ways, convection, conduction and radiation and the efficiency rate is the same at 100%. In this case this Paul Daniels thingy infrared heater claims to be able to convert electricity at a better than 160% rate, its alchemy, but hey people believe it any buy them.

The conversion efficiency of a £20 ALDI convector and a £5000 Harrods Mamite filled radiator is exactly the same at 100%.

The ways to reduce the cost of electric heating are :

    - insulate better
    - turn it down by 60% and go cold
    - go onto an E7 tariff with E7 heat & water
    - wear more clothes whilst indoors

The specific answer to the only question you have asked, which was """are they really a lot cheaper to run than "normal" electric heaters and do you get the same (heat) benefit from them?"" .. .. is no. Its no because they say it draws power for only 30%, that makes it 60% cheaper and 60% less heat. If you turned your """electric heaters"" off for 60% of the time they too would be 60% cheaper - but 60% colder, the same for your TV / oven / or any electrical appliance.

Now what exactly are these """electric heaters""" in your flat ?

Many thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense and goes to prove that in advertising they can get away with anything! My electric heaters are wall mounted, so probably convectors? Like you say the best way to save on heating is insulate and wear more...both of which I do. thanks again for your reply.

HiYa Lisa, your heaters are convector's - these days they are called panel heaters, very popular, and affective in uber insulated buildings because they're cheap, safe, easy to install, maintenance free, and do the job. Unfortunately our building regs even in 2012 don't come even close to 'uber', and 99% of the UK housing stock is nowhere close to being that spec, in fact its decades away.

Maybe he's laughing because Fantasy Heat's 'heat cost per day' is stated as more than double that of the oil-filed rad. :)
