Infrared Heating Panels

  • Well, despite all of the bad press around here, I'll post my experience, briefly as I've written elsewhere already.

I have 2 infrared panels in our house. I would have bought more, but Warmfront are going to install central heating so I've no need to.

Funkyheat's 20m3 room is small isn't it? Not really realistic of a standard living room. One of ours is 16 ish m2, 39m3. Also I think, looking at their advertising they are selling the german panels, Redwell, which are more designer panels, very expensive. One or two companies sell Wellina, same manufacturer, and cheaper, mine by the way are Chinese and cheaper again.

The infrared company we dealt with recommended about 900W of infrared for that room. We bought two 600W panels, which was too much really, but it was the best way to create a well heated room.

The calcs say we need about 1800W of standard radiator, or convected heat to keep the the room warm at -1 C, one panel keeps it just about warm enough, but to be comfortable the second one is needed.

The second panel, we have moved to another room, and due to the room layout it is not as effective. The company we bought from said it would be, but to be fair, this second room is open on to the kitchen, and there is no heat in there at the moment, so it is probably to be expected.

I can only say that like all forms of heating, they have their downsides, they certainly do work. I wonder how many of the posters here saying they are a con, have used seen them or used them.

Pics of my one of my panels.

The conversion efficiency of a £20 ALDI convector and a £5000 Harrods Mamite filled radiator is exactly the same at 100%.

I thought you meant 'Marmite', but just in case it was an exotic substance I looked up 'Mamite'

There was only one entry for Mamite in English (in the Urban Dictionary) - I was shocked!

    - I meant Marmite and its this little bottle of exotic night time drink
    - you are correct, a typo on my part, either that or my dyslexic keyboard

Many thanks for that. It's good to get an alternative point of view and especially from someone who has used them. Can I ask if you think they reduce the heating costs by an sizeable amount?

They can't reduce heating costs because as mentioned previosuly all electric heating is 100% efficient.
  • - two Megawave 1400W panels at £1100 each for one average size UK living room = £2200
    - go for it, both on full belt will give less than this £100 quids worth
    - alternatively you can get 22 of these for the same price as the two R*adwells or even 46 of these

Best of luck in your endeavours to [#1] lessen the cost LisaLJ, thread out for me.

Seriously, can you not understand that these infrared panels produce no more heat, for the same running cost than any other electrical heater.

If they did have some magical feature(that defied the laws of physics) and enabled them to produce heat at a cheaper cost than other electrical heaters, do you not think that the Government, Energy Saving Trust, WHICH etc etc would be telling people to buy them?

Everyone keeps telling you on MSE that they do not produce any more heat for the same running cost. If we were wrong, then the manufacturers would demand that Martin remove such posts. or they would sue MSE.

We are not stating an opinion, we are stating a fact.

I often wonder if people have a vested interest in posting praise for certain products, or are like people convinced that a £5 magnet strapped to the fuel lines of car or oil central heating improves fuel consumption by 42.97%.

Danny Kaye once sang an appropriate song:

All I did was thank somebody for replying to my post but thanks for jumping on me. Must be wonderful to be perfect.

In this instance it is the laws of Physics that are wonderful! albeit I have my moments;)

It wasn't a post just thanking him. You posted:

There were several posts by people explaining the situation with these heaters.

Your quote above clearly implies that someone who has used them is in a better position to judge if they reduce heating costs.

If you want to buy these heaters, that is obviously your prerogative. However this is a moneysaving website and new readers should not be in any doubt of the true position.

If you care to read back over several years of these type of threads, you will find that it is frequently older people that fooled into spending £thousands of 'magic' electrical heaters.

No, I did also ask him a question too, which is allowed on here isn't it?

Yes, some of which I also thanked and and asked questions of. You see I like to treat everyone the same.

My "quote above" implies that it makes sense to ask somebody who has used them their opinion on the matter, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. For instance if you had eaten at a certain restaurant I would ask your opinion on that even if I predisposed to thinking it was an awful place .

Maybe you didn't see my reply earlier where I said, "Many thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense and goes to prove that in advertising they can get away with anything!", which I would have thought IMPLIED more about where my thought were concerning buying these heaters.

Still, they do look pretty <<<
    JOKE ALERT!!!
