  • HiYa Themaddog - welcome to the forum,

For around that price you could have a top quality GCH or a fully integrated Quantum space & water system installed.

    Room heating

    - the Quantum runs on off-peak all year - every year
    - yours runs at twice the price per kW on-peak

    - the Quantum runs on on-or-off-peak
    - yours runs on on-peak only all year - every year

    - the Quantum can use solar, photovoltaics, wind, and store this during periods of low demand
    - yours can not, and runs on on-peak only

    - the Quantum insulation is close to the lowest theoretically possible thermal conductivity, even lower than still air
    - yours has no storage capacity

    - the Quantum is quiet fan-assisted output for rapid heat-up times
    - yours has no assisted convection output

    - the Quantum has a boost element to ensure heat is always available even with unexpected demand
    - yours has no boost capacity, and extra secondary peak-rate pace heaters will be needed

    - the Quantum is already connected to one permanently live electrical circuit, and can benefit from daytime off-peak or free rate costs
    - yours can not

    Water heating

    - The Quantum cylinder has eight sizes, from 75 to 300 litres, in both vented and un-vented forms
    - yours does not heat water

    - the Quantum cylinder is mains pressure hot water for fast-filling baths and powerful showers
    - yours does not heat water

    - the Quantum cylinder is manufactured from stainless steel and has a 25-year warranty
    - yours does not heat water

    - the Quantum cylinder runs on off-peak
    - yours does not heat water, you need to maintain a gas system

    - the Quantum cylinder can be connected to one permanently live electrical circuit, and still benefit from daytime off-peak or free rate costs
    - yours does not heat water

The system is averaging about 30kW a day @ 11.90 pence per kW above my normal usage

Which for comparison purposes is 20% higher than my total daily usage in my 2 bed all electric property which is heated 24/7 throughout to 21.5C in the living room and 18C in the bedrooms.

    Hi Guys

without getting into a heated debate about weather these panel's are good or bad i have to say i read the speal and heard the sales pitches and i have looked up the panels on the internet and ive bought an entire system

    price wise

    i have bought
    4 900w
    3 600w
    1 500w
    1 400w

i have paid £6700 i have also bought a solar panel system to accompany it, now if i look at the FIT and export payments to pay for the panels, the saving generated by the panel's in the summer should in theory give me a reduction in my overall heating costs against my usage of gas that would not be used ....

now i do not sell or advertise any product and i work at a motor manufacturing plant building Cars so for me its about saving money, the Feed in Tariff and the Export Tariff will give me a return on my investment in about 10 years with a further 10 years remaining on the Fit Deal

the system is running with each room set slightly different
    • Living room 21c
    • Bathroom 21c
    • Bedrooms 19c
    • Hallway 20c
    • Landing 20c
    • Kitchen 18c
    • Dining Room 18c
The system is averaging about 30kW a day @ 11.90 pence per kW above my normal usage

so the system at present is costing on a 30 day roiling month approx £107.10 a month

Now the system has only been operating for 2 months so in all honesty i cannot genuinely say if it is good or bad..However it feels warmer than my Gas central heating and feels nicer in a strange way

Congratulations on your new heating system.

With its super high initial cost, and continual high running costs, the energy companies and their shareholders will be very pleased with its performance. ;):D

    Hi Again

its nice to know that a kicking is always grateful

    November 2012

combined gas and electric cost with hot water and Gas Central Heating running at Constant 21c EDF £130

    Nov 2013
Combined gas and electric cost with hot water only and Infranomic Rads Running EDF £129

admittedly its not a 45% saving but gas is getting more and more expensive and its only a matter of time

November 2013 was significantly warmer than November 2012.
I made a £40 saving without changing a single part of my heating system. ;)
  • I agree with lstar337.

We are all basking in a relatively 20%+ less fuel cost like with [annual] like at the moment. That makes the #65 observations in line with 99% of the UK regardless of fuel type used. I'm currently at my normal 22°C having had to turn down my heating. I've just owl'd it and unsurprisingly I'm at just short of 26% less night store input than last year month on month. However I expect this winter to be in line with last winters consumption.

Therefore, all themaddog has achieved, is to lose the saving we are now getting, by switching to a more expensive fuel.

themaddog, if you had stuck with gas you would be significantly better off right now.
  • Hi Thermaddog,

Thanks for posting your purchase costs and also your running costs. I keep close tabs on our oil useage and over November and December we are running at nearly 100 pounds of oil a month, so just a little less than your costs for IR panels.

Install costs were about 7.2k for our oil system in 3 bedroom house, so almost comparable again.

It would be good if you can come back as you go through your first year of IR panel useage and report your running costs and how they work for you in the real world.

The debate rolls on and on, and my own perspective is that IR Panels have something to offer for home heating. One of the problems for me is that the mode of heating is different to conventional heating systems, and comparison is difficult, as comfort is subjective, and so the doom and gloomers just write off IR panels.

I found a 2013 study of IR panel effectiveness for anyone that may be interested....

Finally someone with a positive view Thank you

i have every intention of keeping a data Diary for the next 12 months but have to say im starting to wish i hadn't bothered signing up for this forum someone asked for costing and data and i thought it might be a good idea to be helpful

however if people are going to be so Kick in the teeth at every opportunity then ....what's the point

  • There are hundreds of study papers of IR alternative heating, most or all of which are 'infomercials' put out by and paid for by the carbon / green lobby.

Subjective, just like voodoo and alternative quackery medicines are just that .. .. subjective, no proof that they work at any price other than the placebo. No one is kicking you Themaddog, I just don't share your view of your overpriced heating system and I say so. Clearly you and others will post a defence of your purchase, most human beings even if they have made an expensive disaster will say nothing or try to offer a defence based on immeasurable and ethereal opinions, very few are prepared to openly admit they made a mistake - 'confirmation bias' is a normal human nature trait.
