this is what i just got back
On checking our records, I can advise that your Amstrad digibox was installed on 16 March 2000, therefore as this box is over eight years old, I must advise that there will be a charge of 65.00GBP for a service call. Alternatively, you can purchase a new box for 49.00GBP with a 30.00GBP install fee which will come with a twelve month warranty.

Just realised you are the person with the standard Sky box,not Sky+ . This email will only work for Sky+ customers by the looks of it then. You have had over 8years from the box , if you ring them and tell them that you plan on leaving and going to a competitor , they will probably offer you a Sky+ box for £49.00 , or a free replacement box. They may not offer it on the first call , so go through with you threat to leave (you have 30 days to change your mind)
Then they should ring you within 2 weeks and make an offer (if they havent already done so)

Had my Thomson replaced by an Amstrad today so I'm grateful to the OP for pointing this out.
I've had months of playback problems and it didn't even cross my mind to talk to Sky about it.
Amstrad boxes are prone to getting stuck on standby (so my installer advised).
He also suggested that I don't use the "auto standby" facility as it jams up the box - turn it off chaps for hassle free viewing!0 -

Dear Mr ........
Customer Account Number: ................
Thank you for your email addressed to Mr James Murdoch, which has been passed to me to investigate and respond on his behalf.
I would like to begin by apologising for the problems you have had with your Sky+ box.
As it appears that you require an engineer to either repair or replace your equipment, I can advise that I have arranged a service call, free of charge, for 13 May 2008. The reference for this job is ........... and the engineer will call you before 9.30am on the morning of the job to give you an estimated time of arrival. Should you need to change the date, please email me at the above address.
If you have any programmes on your planner that you wish to keep please back these up to video or dvd as we will not transfer any programmes to your new digibox.
Unfortunately, as equipment is subject to availability, I am unable to guarantee which make of box that you will receive, however I can advise that it will be a new PVR3.
I trust that this is satisfactory and thank you for your patience and understanding regarding this matter.
Kind regards
Customer Liaison Consultant0
