  • wow, i nearly replied the other day, i'm glad i waited. when i was a child if i was sat down on the bus/train and had a long time until my stop i stayed put unless someone who needed it got on. By needed, pregnant, with small children or elderly/differently abled.
i almost always expected that small children be given a seat over a healthy adult mainly as they were the ones more likely to fall over with a sudden stop.

i hold the door for people and when i don't get a thank you, i admit, i will loudly say "you're welcome" to the person who treated me like a doorstop. oddly enough teens seem to be the ones who say thanks the most whilst a lot of the elderly in my area act very rudely.

no-one has a right to get a seat over anyone else, many may have a greater need however and that is what should be taken into account.

  • I don't have any problem with young children keeping their seats when adults are standing, although I do sometimes wonder why parents don't take small children on their laps to free up seats when necessary.

I do dislike it though when large secondary age children going home from school on the bus, often in groups, appear oblivious of the fact that elderly people, sometimes with sticks, are having to stand.

It makes me wonder if they have ever been on a bus with their parents, and have missed out on being coached in appropriate behaviour.

Wow. Are you an OAP? Or just really, really important?

Either of my children (and I) would give up our seat in a flash for an elderly or disabled person. Not for a perfectly able bodied adult capable of standing.

Personally I would be horrified if someone elses child got up and stood to let me sit!! I have no more right or importance than them. They are a person too.

No I'm not a pensioner or any more important than anyone else.

If someone stands up and offers me their seat I will always graciously accept it and if a child would be pleased that they have been brought up with good manners.

Personally I think it is you that has been brought up with bad manners.

An able bodied person should not presume to be more worthy of a seat than anyone else.

I'm not going to tell my father that bringing me up to respect adults is bad-mannered. He would no doubt be horrified!

It is bad mannered to expect other people to put you first. Maybe bad mannered is the wrong word. Inflated sense of self importance might be better.

That's even worse, as I said when a child I was brought up to respect my elders which isn't about giving them an inflated sense of self-importance.

When I was a child I was brought up to respect EVERYONE regardless of age. I prefer my way.
