So, big family gathering with a limited number of chairs, who sits on the chairs and who has the cushions on the floor?

I'd sit on the floor, but then I nearly always do.

They really need to think before they travel so as to inconvenience as little as possible. Lets be honest here the people you describe are unlikely, though not impossible, to be travelling at peak times.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but why should fare-paying adults be standing in place of children.

I used to catch the bus with my children at peak times. I was dropping them at nursery before I went to work.

Also, a five year old could sit on the adult's lap.

A friend of mine had twins, when they were just three she had another set. It was an education to see her getting them on and off buses never mind keeping them safe on the journey.

I didn't say that it never happened that someone with children caught the bus at peak times.

Fair play to her, that must have been hard going.

I must declare that I haven't read ALL the posts.
I am an old wrinkly and not too steady on my feet. One one occassion there were no vacant seats on the bus, and bless her, a child offered her seat only to be told, in a load voice,

"You sit in that seat, at least I paid for it."

Very true of course, but what example to give a youngster?

So by your reasoning, a 15 year old should automatically stand and give their seat to a 16 year old? Seriously?

Yes, as with all things, lines do have to be drawn somewhere.
The opposite of what you know...is also true
