Do you believe then that disabled or the elderly should think before they travel or is it just parents who need to plan their days around "fare-paying" adults so they don't "inconvenience" them? Why do the elderly need to travel at peak times anymore than parents??

Also should we all not be giving up seats to our elders if this is just a case of "respecting your elders". If I was a 40 year old fit adult and someone at 45 got on the bus should I give my seat to them?

And when does a child become deserving of a seat 16/18/21/40???????

Now you're just being ridiculous. Where has anyone suggested that an adult should stand for one five years older and how on earth would they know? ;) Not that it's relevant but most pensioners avoid peak travel due to the business.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but why should fare-paying adults be standing in place of children.

Because some fare paying adults (myself included) perceive a child to be more in need of a seat than they are, just as they may see an elderly, disabled, or for that matter someone holding loads of shopping in more need. That for me is common courtesy and manners. If I don't think the persons NEED is more than mine why should I move?

For me, its irrelevant what age the person is it's about need. A healthy adult is no more in NEED of a seat than ANYone else - children included.[/QUOTE]

It's entirely up to you whom you decide is more in need but that's not the same thing as a child being brought up to stand in favour of an adult.

No-one has yet been able to tell me when this changed and I would be interested to know.

Surely a pre-school child can sit on a lap and a school age child can stand. Using both hands if needed.

A five year old can hold on tight enough to stop themselves falling over when the bus stops and starts? No, really, they can't. They have tiny little hands that really can't hold on that tight.

What other reason is there for feeling, as an able bodied adult, they have the right to be seated while a child struggles to stand?

If a child is young enough to be struggling to stand, nobody would it expect it to give a seat to anyone. In other cases, as people keep saying, it's a question of manners rather than of anyone being superior.

By your logic, fare-paying teenagers should have a seat in favour of non-fare-paying oldies.

Elderly people and the disabled get free travel because of their perceived greater need. However children get cheaper fares because it was always expected that they only sat when seats were free.

Is that your perception or is this written in some statute somewhere?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

One thing I'll take away from this thread is that, the next time I see a child not giving up his/her seat for an adult, I'll know that it really is the parents' fault!

They really need to think before they travel so as to inconvenience as little as possible. Lets be honest here the people you describe are unlikely, though not impossible, to be travelling at peak times.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but why should fare-paying adults be standing in place of children.

    Oh-my-god.

And I thought you had strong Christian values. This is the most narrow minded, ignorant, arrogant post on this entire thread.

Yes, how dare mothers of young children travel at peak times and inconvenience fare paying adults. Make them walk miles to school alone and don't let the mothers out of the house until a convenient time of day.

    Ridiculous huh.

I'm sure people have been throwing about "respecting your elders" so at what age does this apply. By the logic of "respecting your elders" we should all automatically respect anyone older than us.

Or does this only apply to anyone under 16?

As someone else has already said, it used to be in the instructions written at the front of the bus.
