Have the banks got 8 weeks to reply?!!!

Having kept all of my statements, I worked out what I was going to reclaim from the Abbey. :j I then sent them the '14 day letter' and they have sent me a letter saying that they have recieved my claim and it has now been registered and the are looking into it. That's good you would have thought but I sent the letter THREE WEEKS AGO!
They are saying that they will contact me within 4 weeks to 'let me know what's happening'. This is apparently in line with the Financial Ombudsman Guidelines.
What do I do? Do I go ahead with the letter that threatens court action or sit it out the 4 weeks and then act. I have telephoned their helpline, kept on hold for 45 mins on three different occasions. and was told that it would take up to 8 weeks  and they would certainly not answer to any claims within 14 days.
Thanks for any replies

BTW, they have already charged me £60 on the same type of charges as i write this post!!! what can i say?!

They will take as long as they possibly can... then think of a further way of delaying it again.
Set out your own timetable and stick to it.
This is not a complaint you are doing, it is a request for the refund of monies taken from you unlawfully.Hamsters have no tact and diplomacy, nor do they want any.0 -

Hi Unfortunately all banks are saying they have 56 days (8 weeks) however just stick to your timescales as per templates. This is just a kind of fob off proceed as advised and you should be fine.
At least you got an acknowledgement thats more than I got from Natwest! :mad:LBM - April 2007Claimed back my bank charges from Natwest - £1196Halifax Credit Card Claiming £467.35 Rec £467.35!/Capital One Card Claiming - £523.92/Barclaycard Claiming - £403.58 Rec £403.58/MBNA Claiming - £584.37 Rec£584.37Proud to be dealing with my debtsUpdate: 2009 - Currently claiming £1900 from Natwest0 -
I have a claim going through with Abbey for around £6300 inc interest.
I sent template letter + interest, and a couple of days ago, got a letter back from Abbey saying they will try to resolve my 'complaint' within the next 4 weeks.
Any ideas whether I should proceed with the next stage yet, or go by their timescale ?
Thanks in advance

What you are saying then (as quoted from the FAQ is 'Remember. In the letters, YOU set the timetable, so stick to YOUR timetable and don't allow the bank to dictate ).
So I should proceed with the next step then, as they are now trying to dictate the timescale ?0 -

As Nick said stick to the timescales you have given in your letters and not theirs.LBM - April 2007Claimed back my bank charges from Natwest - £1196Halifax Credit Card Claiming £467.35 Rec £467.35!/Capital One Card Claiming - £523.92/Barclaycard Claiming - £403.58 Rec £403.58/MBNA Claiming - £584.37 Rec£584.37Proud to be dealing with my debtsUpdate: 2009 - Currently claiming £1900 from Natwest0
