Looks like the pins on the RJ11 aren't wired how your phones want them.

If the phones are designed for UK use only, then they may require the ring capacitor to ring the phones, though if wired correctly you'd still be able to make and receive calls. Many phones do have the ring circuit built in, but there are some that don't.

If you have an RJ11 lead you could pop to a pound shop and by a BABT master socket (slave sockets don't contain the ring capacitor as this is wired from the master to the slave via pin 3) and then cut the end of one end and wire the correct 2 wires to pins 2 & 5 (or A & B) on the master socket.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

When I was setting mine up I had trouble with the connectors but if the phones can access the PAP2 menu (Dial ****) it will not be that.

The connector that worked I had taged as faulty a few years ago but never threw it out, it would not work on a normal phone with a BT line but when I tried it with the PAP2 it worked perfectly. So now I still don't now what are the right one even though they look the same the wiring is different.
  • Hi,

    Many thanks for everyones help.

    >Does the status page of your PAP2 display incoming/outgoing calls?

Am at work now and will check this when I get home.

BexTech - Will try and get hold of a BABT Master socket and try your suggestion.

BirtBrat - I have not been able to access the PAP2 menu via the phone
    at any stage.

    The middle pins on the RJ11 (3 & 4) should be wired to 2 & 5 / A & B on the BABT plug / socket.

A lot of phones sold in the UK that use RJ11 to BABT plugs often have the wiring different, usually pins 2 & 5 on the RJ11 plug to 2 & 5 on the BABT plug. Thus when using equipment designed correctly to the standard, with the non-standard cables the phones don't work.

If you have a phone which needs the ring signal on a third wire (some UK-only phones, especially older BT models) you can always insert a spare DSL filter between the adapter phone socket and the phone plug in order to introduce the required ringing signal capacitor. (I think someone posted this tip before).

I don't know if the PAP-2 includes this internally or not. Most phones sold these days will work on a 2 wire circuit and don't need the third wire.

I have also noticed differences between VOIP services as to whether incoming calls ring the phone. On mine Sipgate does and Voicestick does not.

    Hi,

Yes I did see the earlier post and I have already tried a DSL Filter. I will try and get hold of another cable and try the DSL Filter again.

    Thanks.

If you cant access the menu then its the connections are wrong.

If it were me I would work on one line at a time, get that working then you have a known working connection and cables. Then set up the other lines one at a time.
  • Hi,

Many Thanks for everyones help on this.

I did not manage to get hold of a BT master socket like BexTech suggested.
I think I will order the US Plug to BT Socket Adapter with Ring Capacitor.

I have managed to get hold of a iDECT X1 phone which I have managed to
get working. I am using a RJ11 - RJ11 cable which I had for my laptop modem.

I decided to setup voipstunt rather then voipbuster because
voipstunt offered free UK calls and I would not find voipbuster offering the UK calls anywhere on their website.
I have only done a few tests using sipgate for incoming calls, although it
does ring and connect, the call does not last long (usually 1 minute) before it
    gets cut off.

Once again thank you for your help.

You might also like to consider voipcheap.com I believe that they have cheaper UK mobile rates than voipstunt as well as having free uk landline.

Though with VoIPCheap.com you only get 90 free days, VoIPStunt and VoipDiscount you get 120 free days.
