Is there a chance that it may not even be the backlight?

A small chance, and I will feel guilty if you go to all this trouble and it doesn't work.

if you can see the faint contents of the screen, then the backlight isn't lighting up.

    That could be

1 wiring or loose connection, unlikely but possible
    2 inverter
    3 backlight

2&3 are very common faults, assuming you have been sent a good inverter and connected at both ends, then 3 is most likely, then 1

motherboard -> wire -> inverter -> wire -> ccfl backlight.

I don't think you should feel bad. It is holding me off buying a new laptop for one. :) That's money saving, since it does work, though not on its own.

If all fails I will come and bring it to you to fix. :D

if you do have a shop near you (not all repair laptops/hardware), it's possible they have a ccfl to plugin and test quickly to check the inverter and wiring are ok

Does the laptop have to be disassembled for that?

to the point you have, they would have to plug in a working ccfl into one end of your inverter board, they may charge you (and not have the part) so call to ask beforehand if you are considering it

Thank you. I'll see if they let me do that for free.

I rang a couple of shops and they said they don't have a ccfl. One said that they would have to order one in but the screens are expensive. I said to them I wanted to plugin so I can see whether my inverter is failing or not. He said that means it's for a lcd screen and the way to do that is you're going to have to get the screen replaced and that will show whether it works or not but the screen will have to be replaced, you will have to get a new one. :s
