Being honest, I don't have any idea what I am doing. Looking at page 90, do I have to go through steps 1-12 in order to find the power connection?

Next time, remember to select FAMILY safe when using Postimage.
Never used the website in my life. I did click family safe though. Also haven't seen anything odd on it (maybe because of adblock). I must have made a mistake along the way, sorry! :)

is the backlight working at the moment?

the inverter is under the screen, so you will have to remove enough plastic to get at it, see p90 and 91, if the fault is intermittent, eg, when you move the screen up and down, then it could be a trapped wire, or a loose connector, or the £15 inverter board.

take photo's as you go along, if it's not obvious how to put it back together, and which screws go where

Don't forget to remove battery and power supply if poking about inside.

I've removed the plastic from the screen and can see the inverter board. Is it safe to turn the laptop on at this stage to answer your question about the backlight?

is everything still connected up?? if so, yes, use battery power, and keep fingers and screwdrivers/screws away from insides while powered up, (other than hitting the power switch)

The screen is dim and not turning brighter when moving it. The only time it was bright was when I turned it on, for a few seconds.

so dim you can't read any text, ie it's there, but no backlight

Yes, I can flash my phone light and see the screen very faintly.

When it works is there any colour tinge to it, or when it started failing.
