Reclaim Unfair Bank Charges Discussion Area

  • I recently sent letter number one to my Halifax Visa card reclaiming £650 in charges.

I am about to calculate the amount owed from my Halifax current account - probrably a shocking amount - from a huge pile of statements and get letter number one off to them too.

I have an current account ready with Alliance and Leicester for direct debits with an electron card (just in case) but I am wondering if there is a trend in Halifax closing credit card/ current accounts after paying up??.

It is obvious that certain banks (A and L) DO close accounts 30 days after being forced to pay back unfair charges and I am wondering if the Halifax do the same?

I'd rather keep all my direct debits there if possible and save all the bother moving things around.

That said, I have been so encouraged about that I have read here I am going to push for the maximum I can have refunded regardless they will close my account or not, because in common with a lot of other people I was hit with cruel and totally crippling charges which snowballed quite a while ago after a change in career - talk about them kicking you when you are down......

Apart from the odd problem the accounts have been running perfectly for the past few years - it was just the 'rough patch' I am claiming for but it is going to be a hefty amount of money.

Well done to all of you who have been sucessful in your claims for justice from the greedy banks...!!

Wish me similar sucess - it is a bit worrying at first....

    Cheers
  • Some banks send the statement/info out in batches so do wait to see if more arrive.

Your loans are different agreements with the bank and should be okay.

Are loans similar to Bank Accounts & Credit Cards in that you can claim
back any charges for a late payment ?

On another tack, I have reclaimed from MBNA formerly Bank of Scotland
credit card, I sent off my claim for default charges requesting a response
within 14 days. I received a reply this morning informing me that they will
be investigating my complaint and will provide me with a response by March 1st. A number was given for me to contact them which I did earlier,
they maintain that due to the massive volume of claims the FOS have now
given them 28 days to investigate a complaint. A complaint meaning the
    claim for default charges.
    Anyone else heard this ?

    Hi!

I recently won a claim from the Halifax from charges on my current account and they haven't closed my account.

It is a bit scary at first but stick with it.

If you are worried about them closing your account however, open a basic bank account or a current account with Citibank as a backup just incase.

    Good luck :D

    Thanks, Edinburghlass.

Since when did banks start changing laws? This doesn't sound correct, do you have a source?

My sister just said that she had seen in on tv, not sure where. Knowing my sister she prob wasnt listening properly but wanted to double check that noone on here had heard anythng like it.
  • One letter and one cheque for £10 will cover your letter asking for info/statements. However, do your claims separately especially as one account is overdrawn as any reclaim will be paid into your account.

If the bank should close your account or withdraw your overdraft they need to give you 28 days notice, I think.

:rotfl: Thanks, will let you know how things go as they progress.

  • Hi All,

Just a bit of advice needed please. A problem with my local Post Office has meant that two letters sent by Next Day Delivery, have actually only been treated as First Class and are therefore unable to be tracked online. One was just the initial "Give me back my money please" letter to Capital One and I'm not too worried about that. However, the other was my LBA to Lloyds TSB and I am concerned as to how this might affect my claim. The thing is, Lloyds TSB haven't been signing for my documents, so I never get the confirmation to print off anyway - should I resend the LBA? Hope this makes sense.

Also, I sent off my SAR to Barclaycard on 13/01/07 and have just received a letter dated 05/02/07 saying that they acknowledge receipt of my letter and will be sending out copy statements within the 40 day legal period. Presumably they are using the date of their letter as day one! More delaying tactics I guess

    Cheers,
    Tina ;)
  • Does anyone know who to send the initial letter to? Is it my branch or somewhere else?
