emma_c82 wrote:I need some help. I have just got my bank charges back from the halifax £927. I'm now going for the credit cards. I called them today asking for my statements etc and was advised by the operator that i would be charged £5 for each one. In total £200. Is this correct? I said i'd look into it and get back to them. Can anybody help?
This is because you asked for statements and the banks/credit card companies are entitled to charge for copy statement. Either write using the letter in the link below or phone them quoting the letter "Ask for charge details", they are entitled to charge you £10 for this.

nickmack wrote:If it transpires that people who run their accounts well, pay far less than those who mis-manage, it makes me wonder what some people who believe they fall into the first camp are concerned about in this thread.
So, I go to a shop and they charge me £30 for a bottle of water.
I say "that's a bit expensive"
They say "well, that guy over there, we charged *him* £700, so think yourself lucky".
Just because people who look after their accounts pay much less, doesn't mean they're not paying more than they should.0 -
It would be interesting to know what % of folks with a bank account are claiming back charges. Those of us opposed to the possible end of free banking on the back of this particular tidal wave are very much the minority on this thread, but surely that couldn't be the case in Britain as a whole? Surely there must be more who play the game/keep solvent/do not incur charges than don't?0

By this I guess you mean, people who run their accounts 'well' should pay nothing. I agree, but it's not my decision.
In reality I think we'll find *if* banks do introduce charges for everyday banking, it will not be across the board, it will only be for those who don't meet certain criteria with regards to deposits or useage.0 -

C/ We are all hamstrung with terms and conditions either pay up or have no account
D/ The charges are unlawful.0 -

Just phoned Freephone number at top of page and spoke to Darren who said statements will take up to 40 days as stated in stat etc......Then he started an argument with me over my account how he doesn't agree with our DMC and said you will have to speak with them, he said no I will speak to you, after tooing and froing for some time, I said I look forward to receiving the statements.

Unless of ill health etc i can see no reason why somebody cannot get a job. I would get a job doing anything if it meant putting food on the table and keeping a roof over my kids head! there just is no excuse!:T This site is great! Thanks to Martin Lewis & everyone who participates and helps so many people! Without you all, where would we be ??:T

nickmack wrote:It doesn't matter whether mistakes were made or people deliberately incurred charges. The penalty charge is unlawful and cannot be enforced. Yes, some people need to manage their money better, but many claimants have genuine problems with money that are not necessarily their fault.
IIRC the OFT said they believe the charges to be unlawful - there has been no judgement made in a court of law as to whether they are lawful or unlawful.
