Yesterday I took a letter into my local branch of Nationwide. It was the template letter to reclaim my charges. I had not walked more than 100m away from the branch when my mobile rang, it was the branch manageress wanting to tell me that this is just a media scam and I won't be entitled to anything back as they are not a holding bank and all the charges are set out so you know about them before hand. She told me 3 times she could see I had spent alot of time and effort writing the letter but I won't receive anything back. She also told me they won't reply within the 14 days as it asks in the letter it will be more like 4-5 weeks at least!!!! She also told me they had received many letters of the same nature. I felt quite patronised by her and wasn't sure if she was telling me the truth or when she said "I will send it off anyway"(twice), she was hoping I would ask her to bin the letter. Does anyone have any idea whether she was telling the truth? Am I getting my hopes up falsely that I might get my charges back?0

i would say rather than give them the letter send it in the post recorded delivery as then they have to acknowledge the letter and you know it has to be dealt with!!
Good Luck0 -

Well that is shocking that she behaved like that. If I were you I would march back there and request the letter back and send it recorded to the Nationwide addresses provided on this website.0 -

Thats disgusting! Can't believe they would speak to you and treat you like that
Just carry on with your claim sticking to the timescales - regardless of whether they reply to you or not just deal with the head office in future.
You will get your money back and after you have won you money back in full, I would also be writing in a complaint to head office about her!0 -
I wish I had been able to record the conversation or atleast someone had heard it. It never occured to me to write directly at Head Office if Ive ever needed to send them a letter before Ive always dropped it in at a branch, although never at this one. I actually feel I never want to use that branch again its an 'agency' one, if I walk into the town there is two other branches I can use. Until I have won and then I might pop in.0

I am sure the banks have records of calls made from their offices in some form or other. Whilst you may not be able to prove the contents of the call you will be able to prove you were called after leaving the building by a member of staff. I would issue a strong word of complaint to Head Office naming the staff member and time and date of the call as well as the contents (even if you cant prove what was said.)
Disgraceful behaviour and further indication of the contempt that customers are held in.0 -

Keep to claiming 8% interest per charge and use the calculator in the main article here :
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1141050760,24632,
This will give you a total of charges & interest to claim.
You cant claim ordinairy interest they charged on the account just whatever they charged on charges. It is difficult to work out and quite frankly I wont be bothering. If you wish to then you need to understand exactly what you are doing. I feel 8% interest on each charge from the date of charge is covering any interest they may have charged me and I dont need the headache of minute complicated calculations.
This is just my opinion, I choose my battles carefully, but it may help you to come to a decision on how to approach it0 -
Can anyone help me, I have sent 4 letters to my bank now, I received a reply to the first which stated that I wouldn't be entitled to any refunds, so I sent a reply stating that was not satisfactory and the charges were unfair etc, then I sent a 3rd and 4th letter to which I have not received any response, the last letter I sent was threatening Court action but now I am bit stuck because I live in the Isle of Man and the Court procedures are a little different here, I have all the forms for small claims action but I do not know who to send the notice too. I bank with Lloyds TSB so they are a national bank, do I use the address on the Island or the Complaints Dept address to whom I have sent the letters too already. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.0
