Unless you are into gaming on a PC it's much less hassle using a Linux based operating system like Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
No problems then with virus and update hassles. Just a smooth computing experience with no time wasted. If occasionally you still still need Windows make your PC a dual boot system of say Mint and Windows 7.

I am sorry but this is way too confusing for me to understand. Dad is a creature of habit and he is used to his computer the way it is - he doesn't like any changes!

Habit being regularly being infected and you spending time and effort fixing it. With people like that the best thing to do is say it's irreparable and buy him a Mac as that gives the best protection for people who refuse to be responsible for their actions

    Nothing confusing to understand.

If your Dad is the type to download viruses than another operating system (OS) where it's much harder to do stupid things is more appropriate for him. The versions of Linux OS are one and they are cheap as they are free and can be installed on existing laptops. A Mac is another alternative OS but you have to pay for it.

Even with creatures of habit i.e. they have to be taught how to use it, they can be sold on using something brand new and sparkling.

This is because you sell it to them as they are now one of an elite group of people who are in the "know" about technological matters.

From my experience it's actually educated younger people who think they should know how computers work who are harder to sell things to, and are more frustrating to help than other users when things go wrong.

Luckily one person I know in this category now has a Mac and the other I've managed to move far away from them so I can't help them. :D
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

The internet seems to be going alright now but his homepage which is his emails is taking about 10 minutes to load. I attempted to delete his temporary internet files twice last night but it failed both time. What else would be making his emails so slow to load compared to other sites? BTW his emails are with BT Yahoo.

He does realise that he needs a new computer but he has no patience and thought that the button he pressed was updating his anti virus.

How much does a MAC cost?
