what's the history of this external drive, is it a sealed usb drive, or an old disk placed in a usb caddy

Get a local computer shop (NOT a big multiple) to check it for you before consigning it to the recycling centre.

Whilst it's good practice to back up before changing hardware configuration, it's not essential - although I will add the codicil that you do so at your own risk.

It is showing all the details again.

He never looked for them since so I didn't think he had any need for them. He probably wouldn't even remember that they are on it.

Thanks for all the responses. I am heading home now.

Any idea what external drive would be best to back up his computer and two old ones, one of them only has a 4.76GB hard drive ASAI remember?

I must get all my own computers backed up to my external drive soon.

I attempted to format it on his pc but maybe it would have worked if I had attempted it on my own?!? I don't know what day I'll be down at my parents house again, possibly this Friday.
