yes he'd have to backup everything first, to an external drive, and make sure it is readable. Any extra programs would also have to be reinstalled. Avast free would be a better choice than mse/defender and superantispyware if you want it to be quick

If the machine has a factory restore partition, F11 at boot, it can take under 20 minutes, and will be as fast as it was when it was new

It would be a good idea to also create the recovery discs if you dont have the dvd.

+ the time for backing everything up + the time spent looking for downloads and CDs for other programs, then re-installing those, and his data not quite less than 20 minutes.....

Compare it to the time this thread has been going (7 hours), an extra half an hour for backup (using macrium for safety), which needs doing anyway shouldn't put the op off, it's cheaper/easier than ram upgrades or a new machine.

Be aware that you'd have to install updates, uninstall vulnerable software (Adobe Reader, Java Runtime as you've just done, etc) and install the updated versions to bring the computer back up to a secure state.

If you reinstall other programs you could soon end up at point where you have lots of uneccessary services & processes autoloading at startup again and you'll be back to square one.

The computer is doing a full MSE scan at the moment. I think it would be a good idea to copy to an external drive.

However I am really tired and want to get home soon as I have been here all day and most of yesterday too!

if you install avast free instead of mse (on your machine too), it has a remote control function, so you can do anything further from home

The computer is going very slow in IE, it takes about 8 minutes to load a page and about another 5 minutes to allow you to click on a link. However if an IE page is opened from the favorites folder it will open immediately?!?

The computer works at normal speed when using Safari.
