Dad has done it again - downloaded something that now stops his IE from loading!

It is a Western Digital WD25008014, 3005A.
That is 250GB unformatted, so your figure of 232GB is about right. Which file system did you use to format it? (FAT32/NTFS etc)

I right clicked the drive and left clicked format.
His operating system is Windows Vista.0 -
I hope you are formatting the correct drives/partitions. ideally the external drive should be ntfs format
copy a file to the external drive to make sure it's writeable, and then do the disk image backup, taking care that you are getting the source and destination correct. The Source drive may have more than one partition. Do not choose the clone option!!
