 Sounds ominous. I do hope you haven't just lost around 150GB of data :eek:

Do you have the make and model number of the external drive?

    It is a Western Digital WD25008014, 3005A.

That is 250GB unformatted, so your figure of 232GB is about right. Which file system did you use to format it? (FAT32/NTFS etc)

Also, to save me reading back, please remind me which operating system Dad's machine is running
How do I add a signature?

I right clicked the drive and left clicked format.

His operating system is Windows Vista.

I hope you are formatting the correct drives/partitions. ideally the external drive should be ntfs format

copy a file to the external drive to make sure it's writeable, and then do the disk image backup, taking care that you are getting the source and destination correct. The Source drive may have more than one partition. Do not choose the clone option

After clicking format (and before clicking start) you should have seen a dialogue box with drop-down boxes for Capacity, File System and Allocation Unit Size etc.?

I double clicked on "my computer" and I looked to see what drives where there. When I plugged in the external drive it appeared on the screen as drive J. Have I done something wrong? What should I have done?

    Yes I can see that!
  • In Steps 2 & 3 of the Macrium knowledgebase link I posted you should be able to browse to and select your J:\ as the Destination Folder.
