Dad got a message on screen saying something along the lines of "Click here to update your anti virus". He clicked it and then IE will not load since, instead it shows a blank screen and the wee circle keeps going round as if it is attempting to load.

Can anyone please tell me is this repairable and if so how?

First thing I'd try would be System Restore to a point before he clicked that link, followed by a thorough AV and Malware scan.
How do I add a signature?

It has now allowed me to do a system restore.

you could also do with MalwareBytes...install (opt out of the Pro trial), update, and quick scan :)

Make sure he also updates his Windows software as MS have released a security update due to a vunerability with IE.

Unless you are into gaming on a PC it's much less hassle using a Linux based operating system like Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
No problems then with virus and update hassles. Just a smooth computing experience with no time wasted. If occasionally you still still need Windows make your PC a dual boot system of say Mint and Windows 7.

If this ever finishes with downloads and updates before I run a scan, how do I copy what he has on this computer and another computer to an external drive?

Plug the external drive into an available USB socket. Wait while it sets up the driver. Reboot if necessary. The drive will appear in Windows Explorer (My Computer) with a drive letter. Copy and paste files across.
