According to http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/iphone/ UK Apple stores stock SIM cards, primarily to sign up customers to UK mobile networks. I phoned two Apple stores near me to find out more. It turns out that they do SIM swaps quite regularly, usually without charge. However, they can't give out any nano-SIMs until Friday.

It reflects very well on Apple and very badly on Orange that Apple has to carry out Orange's customer service for them. This is a complete shambles by Orange.

Where does it say that UK Apple Stores will stock SIM cards on that site?

I called a retail store and they said that they would only have enough sim cards to use for signing up people to subsidized phone plans, not sim only plans. The retail apple store said that sims for sim only plans likely won't arrive to the stores until October. I was advised that a further announcement would be made Monday.

This is starting to look increasingly worse. Guess you have to do month to month with 3 or the like if you want anything more than a brick for the next month.

I totally disagree. I moved from a consumer tariff to a business tariff and noticed a massive improvement. Whereas the consumer customer services are often in India or the Philippines, the business customer services are all UK-based.

Well 2006 even with free broadband consumer chaos Business were hopeless - a apology from the Exec Office as they agreed business could not read repeated emails nor answer accurately.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

The point is that the services they offer on that web page necessitate the Apple store to provide a SIM card.

When it does a SIM swap, the Apple store is agnostic to the type of plan you're currently on (e.g. SIM-only or otherwise), because they are only swapping the SIM, not changing the contract. I explained the scenario in full and was told that the process is regularly carried out by the Apple store and is called a SIM swap.

Thank you. This has given me slight more hope cos whenever I've spoke to Orange reps either in store or on the phone I have had so many different responses.

I blame Apple, given they have the first NANO sim product it was Apple's lack of planning that has left consumers & networks all over the place, how many people are near a Apple store compared to a "network" store ? Hands up please...

Simply Apple prefer you buy outright from them & get a sim from them....Apple then make more money ! It's about Apple not you the consumer nor your network in the slightest.

Someone has to lead the pack... as with micro sims, it's Apple again. Technology has to progress, there's no point in standing still.

The lack of availability of nano sims is entirely the fault of the networks and their poor planning. The same issue occurred when the iPhone 4 came out; you'd think they'd have learnt their lesson this time around!

I am on a 12 month iPhone sim only contract with Orange which expires in June 2013. I am planning to buy the iPhone 5 as soon as I can but as you know, it uses a nano sim and I have a micro sim in my iPhone 4.

So I am wondering, will Orange give me a nano sim? Will they charge me for one? And how would I go about getting one?

Apparently Nokia has a uber NANO sim over Apple's spec.

If Apple want to lead the pack as you say, organise its resellers needs with it's leading....iphone....erm, sim !

i-phone was something with its sleek OS and glass responsive screen....the others caught up, Apple didnt and now its latest release of i5 or nano sim is as badly handled as the i4 & micro sim....keep blaming resellers for Apples's blunders all you wish, repeated issues as fact speak volumes by themselves.

Personally I'm saddened by the demise of i-phones by Apple which showed so much so many years ago compared to now.

Apple aren't a sim card manufacturer. The networks are responsible for ordering their sims.

Apple's sim card standard is the one that's been adopted.

    Indeed.

It was Nokia (along with RIM and Motorola) who wanted to completely redesign the SIM card, Apple just wanted to make it smaller. Surely the 'leaders' should be looking to improve on an old design shouldn't they?
