    The phone has arrived :)

I've ordered the unlock code (mentioned in post 441) and a 8GB microSD card from eBay

I presume I do the ICS after unlocking? Do I d/l the zip file onto the SD card using the phone or my PC ... or doesn't it matter??

I've not paid for it yet and can't check as the Very website is down.
How do I go about getting cash back (was it top cash back?) as well as my £30 off (already approved) or am I too late for that now?

    Sorry - so many questions!

I would unlock it after update (I did) so you can do that now, it should not matter but just in case something freaky during update causes it to lock again.

Presume you have a suitable card reader for a micro SD, or ordered one with a normal size SD adaptor and have a slot on your PC for normal SD.

Format it as normal Fat32, extract update folder files to it.. set 'fastboot' on phone to off, power off phone, install card, go. Afterwards remove folder from SD card or move it to a folder, just in case somehow one day you booted the phone pressing the keys and started the flash again!!

Sorry you have missed out on cashback...

You needed to register (open a free account) at topcashback or quidco. You then from within that site - look up Very and follow the link to Very before placing your order. The topcashback site is then able to track your purchase on Very, they then basically share the 'referral payout' with you.

Well I am 500 years old with a half paid mortgage and in true moneysaving style no credit whatsoever, all credit cards paid in full every month (takes at least 450 years to get in this position ;) )

So I suppose I am a credit check wet dream.

I am 550 years old and in almost the same position as you but I am still waiting for the credit approval!

From what I can gather Very have not got the best customer service.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Very will break every DSR, Sale of Goods Act, infact every legisaltion that applies they will ignore it and you enforcing it.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • Sillygoose - THANK YOU! I plucked up my courage and upgraded my phone to ICS yesterday evening and it worked perfectly! I saw you mentioned that you've tweaked your phone in lots of other ways - if they were apps rather than rooting, I don't suppose I could beg you to list them?
Re cases I would like to state here and now that no-one has ever accused me of being sensible and so I decided I wanted a terrifically luxurious ultra thin leather case for my cheap phone - a Sena case - they cost around £25! I actually managed to discover that one made for a Samsung Galaxy S would fit perfectly and found one on ebay for £12.95. Stupid I know but I LOVE it! :)

Card reader I have - it says it's '35 in one' so presume it will take the micro, but yes, it comes with an adapter.

So ... just to confirm (I don't think you actually say :o) we d/l the ICS with the PC and put it onto the SD card, then do as above?

    :)

    :)

    Download zip file to PC

Put SD onto PC so it is seen as a new drive, its probably already formatted but do it yourself to make sure its good, not quick format, the full thing.

Unzip the zip contents straight onto SD, eject the SD.

Turn off fastboot in phone settings. Make sure at least half a charge.

    turn off phone, install SD.

Power up phone firmly holding both sides of volume rocker down.

Stuff should start to happen then phone will reboot into ICS - 1st boot takes a long time.

Done.... Later on remove the files from the SD card to avoid accidentally reflashing and use to put your music, movies etc on.

Put in non voda sim card, when it asks for unlock code put in your code.

Start playing! £70 phone on latest Android with a specification not far off an Iphone4.

See post 538 for a start. ICS allows a lot of freedom. For example the phone dialer icon fixed in the bottom left of each home screen.. you can drag it to the trash can and replace it with another! You can of course put it back as it was again. Same with any so you could replace the browser button with one for your prefered browser for instance.

So I bought (Google Play store) the pro version of XPhonePro (£2.49) installed and replaced the standard phone button with this programs icon.

I don't know how I missed that post! Great. I'll slowly start exploring - just as soon as I find out how to stop the blue led light flashing, notifying me of I know not what! ;) Just managed to stop it! :)

This has been such an informative and helpful thread, I'm learning far more than I expected about using my G300.

After downloading some free apps or using Favourites, I can use Skype, read newspapers, check the next buses from a local bus stop, listen to the radio and plan routes using wifi. I've only done this at home so far (thus using my own broadband service) and I assume I can do this when out and about, including abroad.

    My questions:
    • which of wifi and internet data (if either) is likely to use more battery power?
    • if I find a wifi hotpsot abroad (for example in Switzerland or South Africa), will I be able to make Skype calls, read UK newspapers and listen to UK radio without charge?
    Thanks for your advice.
