Wow, what a bundle of helpful advice! Thanks, sillygoose, JethroUK and d123.

    Partial update:
    • I cleared the redundant wi-fi settings, except for certain ones that only had a Connect option (presumably neighbours).
    • I have an Orange contract (an old one no longer offered, with PAYG rates paid monthly in arrears).
    • I found slightly different APN settings for Orange contract.
One thing: when I switched on this morning, wi-fi and data enabled settings were off again and I needed to switch on. Is there a way of keeping these on?

Thanks again for the splendid advice. I will take a break and try the new settings shortly.

Hi Roger1, so are you actually powering down your phone completely or do you mean just a short press on the power button to blank & lock it?

If powering off, In settings try setting 'Fastboot' on (if its not) then with wifi/data set on try power off and then on. It should come back up in the same state it was powered off.

(Android 4 takes quite a while to sort it self out and completely load on a full boot even though it seems operation, bits are still initialising behind the scenes. Its best to leave it alone for a minute to let it get on with it)

If that doesn't help, there is also a setting in the wifi section under advanced to do with keeping wifi powered up under different conditions. I think your mobile data goes off too because its not got enough settings to work yet.

    Result! AOK.

    :)

    Thanks again, folks.

sillygoose: Thanks for your further advice. I must admit I usually leave the phone dormant and will follow your suggestion when switching off. Fastboot is on, BTW.

Thanks to your help earlier, I'm using data when out and about.

However, I lose the data and often the phone connection when on/in the Underground, switching off in the cinema or just if the phone is 'sleeping'. No big deal - I just need to reconnect - but it's annoying if I want to make a call. And presumably anybody calling me wouldn't get through.

I've been through the menu several times and can't find the Advanced option. Could you give me a clue, please? Thanks.

Hi, I was talking about wifi advanced so I don't think it will help you with this.

Its understandable that you lose data/calls on the underground, butou should never have to manually do anything, calls at least should come back on as soon as the phone sees a signal?

Likewise as long as the APN settings are right so its actually capable of connecting (sounds like your is), the only thing that I can think of that would disable data would be picking up an open wifi (of which there are many around now) as a wifi connection takes precedence - even if it only gets you to a screen asking for payment to go on the net the actual connection is valid.

Try turning off wifi before leaving home and see if data stays on? (or comes back when available).

Yes and seems to be in stock too. Also @ £85 on the Vodaphone site but someone reported that about £5 cashback (Topcashback) tracked too so only £80 if it pays out so might be worth a go.

So you really wanted a Nokia for Christmas? ;)

Have not played with many apps on the phone lately, too busy setting up some tablets for young people. All those games I have had to 'test' terrible chore :D

Real Racing 3... awesome! not to mention Tank Hero, Super Chicken, Cut the rope, Agent Dash........

APP Lock is really useful, the program is password protected itself, then it lets you put a lock on any apps you don't want anyone messing with. Anyone then tries to run the app and it pops up a keypad for your pin code before letting you in it. Not high security but enough to deter younger kids.
