Thanks, sillygoose.sillygoose wrote: »... is data switched to come on automaticallyUnder settings - wireless&networks - more - mobile networks - data enabled is ticked?Then..
If you switch wifi off in settings you should then get a symbol or little letter appear above the signal bars in the top bar indicates a mobile data connection present.
When I tried earlier today, I had wi-fi on and Data enabled. When I got out of range, I had an onscreen offer to connect via BT Fon for a fee. (I didn't.) The same applied when I added Data roaming. I could still make a phone call.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any advice you can offer.0 -

There's your problem
When your "free" wifi goes out of range you get a message warning you will have to use your (not free) 3g data connection
If you dont agree you will lose your data connection completely
This wont affect phone serviceWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

Sorry but that's not it. His phone has lost his wifi and has tried to connect to someone else's instead. BT(fon) provide a big wifi hotspot network to its customers by allowing strangers to connect to its domestic customers routers on sort of separate channel, if your a BT customer your providing a free wifi hotspot for other people! (you can opt out)
I don't think it should try to connect without asking though unless the op has given it permission to before. I think there is a setting to tell the phone to try to connect to hotspots when possible automatically, I suspect Roger has this on.
So whilst the phone is still trying to use a wifi, even if unsuccessful it won't try to use mobile data, so he won't get the 'may incur charges' message.0 -
Thanks, JethroUK and sillygoose.
I have 500MB a month for Orange mobile internet (and use very little for reasons that are becoming clear). My assumption is that I can use mobile internet for data using wi-fi and data enabled. (Also always-on enabled but I guess that's a red herring here.) But that's not happening. When I have used data away from home including outside the UK, I have used local wi-fi.sillygoose wrote: »I think there is a setting to tell the phone to try to connect to hotspots when possible automatically, I suspect Roger has this on.

There's something else that may be relevant. When I switch the phone off as opposed to leaving it on standby, I have no data or phone connection when I switch back on and have to reset data enabled and 3G connection. I looked at the Huawei manual and can't find any reference to locking the connection. This combined with no data shown under APN settings is becoming worrying.
Under About phone, I see:Android version 4.0.3
Baseband version 2030operator and country info:
Operator name: vodafone
Country name: GB

If wifi and mobile data are both enabled, wifi always takes priority and keeps mobile data off - when you get connected to a wifi signal even if its one you then need to pay for, as far as the phone is concerned your on wifi.
First of all in wifi with wifi on press and hold on all the other wifi connection entries (even ones saying not in range) and if available press 'forget network' EXCEPT for your own home one of course. They should disappear off the list.
On the same screen press the menu button and select advanced, make sure 'notify me when an open network is available' is unticked.
Together these should stop you adhoc connection to other wifi. (If its available somewhere you can still set it to connect as usual) I just think you have several wifi profiles in your phone that its trying to use that you don't want. Once you try to connect to one it remembers you gave it permission and tries again when it gets an opportunity.
Next issue is your Orange mobile data.. have you tried manually setting up your settings? is your Orange on contract or PAYG?0 -
I would suggest the problem is a lack of Orange settings for the data in the settings menu. Depending on the Android version it should be settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > Access point names. There should be an Orange entry with a green dot next to it.====0

Yup, thats the next bit0 -
I'm having difficulty staying connected with my Orange SIM. My G300 is Tesco/Vodafone unlocked via the Hong Kong contact.
No problem at home, where the wifi works off my broadband connection. When outside the house, I lose the phone connection. I thought at first I was in a poor signal area but it happens every time and I have to try to reconnect afresh.
When all else fails, read the instructions! Checking the manual, para 7.1.1 says:OK, I get to the APN page which appears as a blank screen, i.e. no settings shown.
Help! How do I enter the Orange APN settings? (Normally I reconnect via Network operators / Available Networks.)
Thanks.
Having reread the page I see my guess is probably correct.
Roger, you need to manually input the Orange settings into the APN page. When you are on the blank APN page touch the menu button and you should have a "+ New APN" pop up appear.
Touch that and it should open a page upon which you will need to input the orange data settings.
A quick google finds these as Orange PAYG settings.I am on PAYG Orange...

Great d123, saved me posting all that. I just wanted to get him to clean up his wifi first, otherwise we can't tell if mobile data gets working properly, not whilst his phone is trying to mate with every router in town0 -

also worth deleting any existing APN settings
When I entered my own APN settings mine still wouldn't work until i deleted any existing vodafone APN settingsWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0
