What made me think it could be the fasting is that not eating makes your body produce the healing hormone - so is the healing making my body chuck out all the crap that is in it hence spots etc?

I'm not a doctor so I can't really say. However, I would have thought that if it is the case, many more people would have experienced similar issues.

I have only just started doing the 5:2 but my wife has been doing 4:3 for several weeks now (with a lapse over Christmas) and has not had any problems at all.

Mainly just eating less although I am trying to cut out things like crisps, chocolate, alcohol etc to help me be healthier.

I thought the same too, is my body having a good clear out and that's why I have got spots.

I've been on it since october, and can't say I have noticed anything either.
I'm not sure there is such thing as the "healing hormone" (although I like the idea...:rotfl:); the diet affects the levels of hormones that exist normally in the body.

Anyway, maybe it depends on where your metabolic starting point/baseline is...
But I wouldn't consider bleeding and swollen gums as a normal side effect and I would pay a visit to my dentist.

  • I have done two jazzersize classes on fast days this week and have felt fine. I did one this morning without breakfast, drank loads through the class and didn't feel dizzy. wasn't even hungry when I finished. I waited while 1pm before I had my breakfast of soft boiled egg and soilders (ww malted danish). I've made The hairy diets golden vegtable soup for tea, 121 cals per bowl.

I've been reading the comments about skin and must say my skin has never been better. I do suffer from spots especially on my cheeks & chin, but for the last few weeks I havn't had any (touch wood):j

I was refering to this article where he talks about the switch from growth to repair. And no it's not healing hormone its actually absence of growth hormone.
Fasting lowers levels of IGF-1 and also appears to switch on a number of DNA repair genes. The reason seems to be that when we run out of food our bodies change from “growth” to “repair” mode.

Seems to be a real mix of opinions here. Will see how things go then

    .

Actually, it is Far more complex.
Fasting appears to decrease levels of insulin like growth factor, igf-1, whilst it increases levels of human growth hormone.
Which is probably why metabolic changes are so difficult to predict and explain.

  • It's a fasting day for me today. I made a stir fry earlier. But instead of noodles, I used julienned courgette. I'm not a huge noodle fan so this was much better for me. Plus, a lot less calories too!

Last fast day of the week for me today. Was thinking about having a stirfry so I might borrow your tip Old Socks. I've been keeping a food diary and noticed that I've been eating a lot of bread and processed carbs since NY so that's the next thing to cut down on!
