  • Can I join please? I'm looking to lose about 28 pounds to go from 12 stone 4 lbs BMI 27 to 10 stone 4lbs BMI 22ish. I've got the go ahead from my doctor to lose weight.

I'm TTC so any weight loss will greatly help my chances! Does anyone have any tips for making your 500 calories go further- I think I'll be splitting them up into a lunch and tea...
  • Hi everyone! hope you are all well.
I have been watching this thread for a while, and this week decided to try the 5:2 diet. This is due to health reasons (my GP has threatened medication which I don't fancy taking).
Found my first fast day really easy, really struggled with my 2nd fast day (chose a weekend day - too much temptation, wont do this again). I was really hungry the second day.
At the moment I am splitting my fasts into 100 cal breakfast, 150 cal lunch, 250 cal dinner. Is this the norm?
Im not too good at missing meals!

I did spread out my food in the first few fasts; psychologically, I felt like I needed to keep 3 meals. But none of the meals really 'filled the gap', if you know what I mean.
So one day, having skipped breakfast, I also ignored the lunch I had taken with me and managed to last the day without any difficulty. When I got home, I had a generous bowl of vegetable and lentil soup, a very generous vegetable stir - fry and some fruit and felt nice and full. So now, this is the pattern I follow.
A lot of meal times craving is from your brain rather than your stomach. After your body has adjusted to fasting, the hunger hormones 'grhelin' stops being produced at the usual time and you won't feel so hungry.

Very true. My wife was brought up to eat six times a day and, at first, it was quite hard to persuade her that she wouldn't die a horrible death if she ate less frequently.

I am the same, on fast days I only eat dinner. Quite easy to do.

I had a bad week last week due to food poisoning so skipped a fast day and then didn't quite manage to stay under 500 calories on Friday. However, I weighed myself on Saturday and I haven't gained any weight. At present I am weighing 8stone 13lb having come down from almost 10 stone on this diet.

  • Hallo there! I am an occasional chatterer on the forums and just found this thread, which is great, because I started 5:2 with the new year. Fasting on Monday and Friday fits in best with grandchildren days and a little weight has gone, though it is hard to tell as it goes back on a bit on feast days. I use the live stronger app to keep calorie count, it helps to remind me I AM counting on fast days! I also keep to around 1500 on feast days as I do want to shift a couple of stone ideally. It will be my sixth fast day tomorrow, mostly green tea, black coffee, water through the day, then steamed haddock and veg for dinner and an apple. OH isn't joining in so finding you all for back-up is wonderful!

Not really - this weather is ideal for hot soup! I like Chinese style hot and sour soup, really healthy (with ginger, garlic, chilli and lemon) but light. Sometimes I make it just with veg (mushrooms and spinach) as a starter, but now that it's cold I usually add some prawns or shredded chicken and a packet of glass noodles (130 cals), and it's a couple of satisfying bowls of goodness :)

Also, I seem to get more enjoyment out of hot drinks in this cold weather - things like green tea, hot water with a splash of lemon, even a cup of Bovril...

I find weekends pretty difficult to stick to a decent number of calories. I always end up caving in to cravings and eating far too much, and making wrong food choices. They're not fast days but even though I fasted last weeek, the effect of the weekend meant that I didnt lose any weight at my last weigh in. Where does my willpower go?!?

Was going to have a fast day today. Got up & made cuppa for DH & me, came back to bed 'cos its snowing thickly & forgot & had my TWO ginger biscuits - hangs head in shame. Maybe I'll check the calorie content as part of my 500 or maybe I'll just join DH with the muffins this morning - decisions decisions!

About 100 in 2 ginger biccies, I have done the same thing with toast and vitalite more than once - which is a fair bit more.

I have just bought cherry tomatoes to keep me going, it's snowing here and does not look like a fast day but it is.
