This is my first post in this forum so please be gentle!

Ok, here are the pertinent facts:
    Current weight - 11.5 stone
    Height - 5'7"
Insulin dependent diabetic for 35 years (I am 40 in October)
    Problem(s):
I eat heathily and work full time (shift work)

On a work day my meals are as follows - Oat Granola or Crunchy Bran for breakfast with semi-skinned milk, mid-morning is a banana, lunch consists of sugarsnap peas, courgette, carrot, cherry tomatoes, Activia Fibre yoghurt, apple, and some grapes. Mid afternoon snack is usually another apple or other fruit. My evening meal is variable, usually pasta, or chicken, but sometimes only scrambled egg on toast.

I don't snack between meals, everyone comments on how little I eat, I rarely feel hungry, BUT I'M PUTTING ON WEIGHT NOT LOSING IT!!!

Admittedly my exercise regime is limited! Although I'm getting a bike soon and hope to cycle to and from work at least twice a week (4 miles each way).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to lose about 2 stone???
All replies gratefully received. I suspect more exercise is required but I hate getting hot and sweaty!!

    Sorry for rambling!

Hi sread I am diabetic also for the last 8 years anyway....

The nutritionalist should be able to help you with the weight loss plan as she did me (there was a wiating list though and by the time I saw her I had lost 2 and a half stone on my own!)

A diabetic heathly eating plan is the same as the non diabetics, plenty of fruit, veg, fresh fish, easy on the alcohol, no smoking ( I do!) oatsosimple or weetabix or shreddies for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch or sardnies on wholemeal nimble bread, snacks muti-grain ryvita crackers, cucumber slecies, pepper slices, dinner every conceivable veg especially green (spinach, leeks, brocolli, park choi, brussel sprouts, etc) as well as carrots, cauli, mushrooms, steamed peppers, swede (anything in the 1st 3 aisles of the supermarket!)

Fruit apples, bananas, fromage frais with strawberries, fat free greek yogurt I AM SURE you know what to eat (you have been doing it longer than me!)

It is just that and in moderation, mine was portion sizes, lack of exercise , now I have cut all crisps, sweets, biscuits, processed foods, high calories, all the fat and cycle or walk everywhere, much more active than I ever was, that and intake of less calories and more doing adds to a weight loss for me of 2/3 lb a week sometimes 4 lb and 14 weeks later 2 stone 10 lb off!!

It will come off, patience, motivation, determination and focus play a key part in it and I wish you well...

How do people make their ice lollies? I make mine for a creamy taste with the no added sugar angel delight sachets with skimmed milk and put them in the freezer to set...the kids love them, I also buy from asda the no sugar lollies, I think there is 50 in a box for 99p, I buy the light vanilla ice-cream, rarely have it but the kids love ice-cream so at least I know they have less sugar content....

  • Hi everyone I have been reading for a while but feel I need to join you. I have gained over a stone in 2 months and i need to get rid of it for summer as my summer wardrobe won't fit. My main problem is that I am on steriods and will be for life. I have bought a smaller plate and have found that a really good way of watching my portions. Now just have to stop eating between meals as I eat when board. Has anyone some good tips to take my mind off food? Also I am aiming to walk 100000 steps aday but need to do some other exercise but cant afford the gym has anyone any ideas. Sorry about all the questions but hoping you can help.

Hi all, what a gorgeous day we've had, I can't bear to be inside when it's so lovely.

sread81114 at 5' 7" for you to lose 2 stone would put you in the only 'just above underweight' range. Are you sure you want to be that slim? It's much harder to maintain that weight than it would be to maintain at around 10 - 10½ stone, which would see you nicely in the middle of the 'desirable' weight for height range.

I don't think you could afford to cut back on the food that you're eating at present as it doesn't seem to be a lot (but then I have a massive appetite and eat loads). So perhaps you could try altering the pattern of what you eat - if you regularly eat lots of carbs, try going for more protein; vary the amounts that you eat at meals (remember the saying about "breakfast like a king and dine like a pauper"); drink more water (at least 2 litres a day and more in the warmer weather); bulk up your meals with more vegetables.

I read recently that more and more of us are showing an intolerance to wheat products, so perhaps you could try and avoid wheat for a week and see how it affects you.

Honey, hope you're feeling better after your 'heavy' night

Victory, I love boot sales too - our first big one is next Sunday and I can't wait, hope the weather stays as nice as this.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Hi and welcome to the thread. Walking those 10,000 steps a day is good exercise, you may find you don't need much else. To take your mind off food when you're bored I suggest taking up a new hobby. How about knitting...... old-fashioned I know, but very soothing and you can't knit and eat at the same time. Or you could start card-making or just get in the bath with a good book and have some "me" time.

Someone asked about the special "diet" plates which are available to buy. They're so expensive and any plate will do the same job, so I definitely wouldn't waste my money on one.
