In my job I deal with many people of my age who are not very computer literate, many of them are actually scared witless by them. So going into a shop to buy one would mean they would put their trust in the salesperson.

it's obvious that you and many others blame the OP's mum for putting her trust in the salesperson. This can also be seen by the way you keep arguing with me when I try to defend the OP's mum.
You seem to have avoided the one question that I asked.

So do you, or do you not, agree that individuals should take some responsibility for their actions?
Just for clarity, I mean both the customer and the salesperson.

They work under immense pressure to sell though.

To say a salesperson is selling something to earn themselves a quick buck is entirely different to saying that they are under pressure to sell something.

From my experience there's the same pressure as there is in any sales jobs (and I've been in a lot)

How can they if they are misled by someone that is helping them.

IT is obvious to all reading that the ops mum has been had by a slimeball of a salesman who has misdirected his mum who went into pcworld to BUY a computer and not rent one.... These sales staff have no shame just targets...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I don't think it makes the slightest difference.

It sounds like you have worked in PC World, if so please explain why a salesperson would push a customer in to a expensive hire agreement?

I'd also like to know if they sold TV's when you were there why would you push the expensive HDMI cables?

I have worked in PC World, very recently actually.

As none of us were there at the time we can't say what actually happened, while I admit it seems that the salesperson didn't tell the full story of the agreement, none of us can be certain of anything other than the salesman and the OP.

Just because you may not agree with the contract doesn't mean its not right for everyone.

As for the HDMI cables, its no secret that they make companies profit, I work for another retailer now (John Lewis) and even THEY sell expensive HDMI cables.

Companies exist to make money, if they don't make money they don't exist. If you don't want to purchase a HDMI cable from Dixons, Comet, Best Buy, John Lewis or anyone else because you think they are expensive then don't. No one is forcing you to.

It's like when you purchase insurance for your car and the salesman tries to get you to take all the extras - breakdown cover e.t.c. They do that to make money, you're not REQUIRED to take it.

I doubt the rental agreement would be much good for anyone, although admittedly I don't have the figures.

With HDMI cables though PC World staff actually lie to their customers and tell them that the expensive ones give a better quality picture. I have no problems with stores stocking these cables I just don't appreciate the fact that customers are lied to
