From the information given by the OP I would suggest this is a SCAM. Sounds like a middle aged lady goes into PC World to buy a laptop and a saleman has thought about getting some easy commission.

It's all very well going on about you should have read the T&C's but a lot of people are far too trusting of the salespeople.

I would contact PC World head office and complain that your mother was duped into renting something that she went into buy. See what they say, but I'd suggest you add up all the rental payments and take that from the original purchase price then offer to pay the rest.

Of course they have no legal obligation to do this but if you don't ask you don't get. I personally would even suggest that my next step will be the small claims court, even if you don't go ahead with it.

Don't let people on here get you down most of them side with the shops and are more than happy to see people getting conned.

That doesn't make it a "scam" though.

Mom is a generally accepted American term. I have lived both sides of the Atlantic. Where in the UK is mom used more often in a local dialect over mum?

You may have lived both sides of the Atlantic but I'm guessing you have never lived in the midlands then. Specifically around Birmingham and the black country where Mom is used regularly and has been in use since industry reached those parts. It is so common that you can buy cards in local card shops that say 'mom'.
There are other parts of the uk that use it as well.

People who generally accept it as an American term are I'm afraid very much wrong.

If OP was born and raised in one of those areas it's as natural for them to use that term as it is for me to use Mum. To be honest I get a little sick of people on this forum jumping on posters for using the term and crying Americanism. People should perhaps remember that dialect can be very localised and what is common in many areas of the uk isn't necessarily in others.

I think it does, as the total purchase price ends up being far more expensive and the OP's mother wasn't made fully aware of what she was getting into.

Ops mum signed a contract for a specific service which has been fulfilled - so scam, no.

There is no link between the purchase price of goods and whether something is a scam.

A silly unsubstantiated statement, worthy of no further comment.

I'm "middle-aged", does that make me an easy target for so-called unscrupulous salesmen or incapable of sitting down and reading what I thought would be an HP agreement before signing on the dotted line. Does middle-age (or a middle-aged women for that matter) suddenly mean your common-sense goes out of the window!

I'm middle aged myself but I work in IT, unfortunately most people my age are not as computer literate and are easy targets.
