Happy due date Emsbet.
25 week check with the midwife this morning then I'm off to Portugal with the girls for a week. Hope to see lots of new babies once I'm back0 -
There was a very good very short list of what you need for a baby in one of the books I've read recently - this is First Time Parent by Lucy Atkins. (Rups, she also has a bit about choosing your buggy)
She says
clothes:- 6x vests (long/short sleeve dep on season)
- 6-10 babygros,
- 6 pairs socks,
- 2-3 cardigans,
- 2-3 hats,
- warm all in one outer if baby due in winter
- 4 packs disposable newborn nappies (if using disposables) - 60 a week at first (!)
- 3 large rolls cotton wool
- unperfumed baby wipes for if you're out and about and can't do the cotton wool wiping thing
- buggy
- crib/moses basket
- 3-4 sheets for cot & sleeping bag for season or 3-4 cellular blankets (no duvets/quilts)
- 10 muslins
- baby monitor
- bouncy chair
- baby sling
- rug to lie down on (baby)
- nappy changing mat
- nappy bag (doesn't need to be a 'nappy bag' though, any bag will do)
She also gives a list of things you want for you post-birth, and for feeding (if bottle feeding, 6 bottles with newborn teats, a way to sterilise, baby formula, baby bottle brush)
and of course if you need to go anywhere in a car ever you'll need a car seat. (Including getting home from hospital!)0 -
can anyone advise on swimming please? I know i have asked before. i want to go to my local leisure centre but they do no aqua natal classes. if i just want to swim, can i just do anything in relation to the type of swimming/strokes? I normally do breast stroke/front crawl. dont want to do something OTT!!! thanks xx
I continued with my usual 30 or so lengths throughout my pregnancy. I even went swimming on my due date
I've heard that breaststroke's best avoided because of the strain on your pelvis. I've also heard that breaststroke's fantastic for getting the baby in the right position!
My rule of thumb: if 'experts' can't agree on the right advice, it usually means they can all be safely ignored
Do whatever stroke you're comfortable with, stop if you experience pain or (strong) discomfort and bear in mind that, at some stages in your pregnancy, typically around 28 - 34 weeks, you'll really run out of puff! At this point your blood volume is really increasing and it's the top time for palpitations and breathlessness. It's nothing to worry about, it just makes swimming a bit difficult!"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Morning all!
Happy due date emsbet! Can't believe it's here already - not long til mine now either.
Slept reasonably well last night. I've had 2 days now without the RLT and I think it must have been that causing the strong BH pains as I didn't notice that I had many last night.
Cat asked to be let in 3 times last night - think he's getting me in training for when Bean arrives. He's very confused about what's happened in the bedroom though, as he came in and Moon's bedside table is still downstairs, and he can actually get down the side of my bedside table now that I've cleared out loads of junk. He sat there sniffing the bin next to my bed for a while - must have been an interesting smell in there I guess, as this was in the normal place. :rotfl:Then he curled up on the floor by the wardrobe, as he obviously thought there wasn't enough room on the bed. Don't know where he is now - outside somewhere.
The bedroom ceiling is drying nicely, although it's really cold here at the moment having to have the windows open. Will have to find a jacket that I can put on as all my jumpers will be too tight to go over the bump.
Going to try and get a bit of washing done this morning as the forecast for this afternoon and the next few days isn't looking good, and I can spot blue sky and a breeze out there at the moment.
Hugs to all who need or want them, and labour vibes where appropriate.

If anyone is interested in my tips for a travel system, I use the car a lot and wanted to be able to click the car seat onto the frame without waking the baby (to get shopping, etc.).
I found that an isofix base (or the like) was fantastic. Expensive I know, but since I had my DD in the coldest winter for 30 years, it meant I didn't have to spend long getting the car seat in and out. I went for the cheaper option of a belted base and it wasn't as good as a isofix would have been, as the belt got in the way.
I also regretted the fact that my car seat requires two hands to release it from the frame. One button on the top of the handle for release would be much better.
The basket under my travel system (3 wheeler) was far too small. My handbag wouldn't fit in it. I found that carrying my handbag over my shoulder while pushing the pram gave me a sore back.
Because I live in the middle of the country and the nearest shop is about 5 miles away, I didn't use the carrycot attachment once. I just used the carseat attached to the frame. When I took the baby for a walk I would drive 20 mins to the park, walk for and hour and drive 20 mins back, so not too long for the baby to be in the car seat.
My BF is overdue now and asked me to help her pick her travel system. She liked a few and taking into account the above she decided on the Britax B-Smart pushchair, which lies flat, so no need for carrycot and the Britax Baby safe (Which has a one handed release) with the isofix base. The three items were on offer in boots at the time and there was an online 20% voucher, plus Quidco and 10 Advantage points per pound, so worked out at £330 for all three. An independent baby shop near us were asking £560.
Hope this helps.0 -
There was a very good very short list of what you need for a baby in one of the books I've read recently - this is First Time Parent by Lucy Atkins. (Rups, she also has a bit about choosing your buggy)
I've got this book too, and I think it's really good. DH has found it especially useful, as it's quite short, and not too detailed. Very common sense approach, not too prescriptive etc. We've also got Your Baby Week by Week, which is *very* detailed, so they're quite a good combination. DH is reading the week by week one at the moment, he keeps telling me "interesting" facts about things I think he's secretly horrified by! :rotfl:Little monkey born November 2012:jFroglet due March 20160 -
Cat has come in and had an explore upstairs. He's managed to find a lot of dust at the bottom of the airing cupboard (makes mental note to hoover this out when he's gone out again - he's scared of the hoover), he's looked around the spare room (Bean's room) and is currently curled up asleep on the changing mat under the spare room bed. Hello ladies
As you may have guessed I'm back from holiday! Was good to get away although of course how did I manage to miss the last week of summer?? Anyway, all good here, had my 28 week appointment today (actually 29 weeks due to the holiday). I am starting to look very pregnant, still got 3 months to go, and while I still feel fine and don't always want or need to sit down on busses etc, I think I'm going to have to start doing so to make sure all you ladies who do need to sit get offered a seat! It was very hot on the underground on Sunday though, I'd hate to think what it must be like to do that in rush hour when it's properly crammed!
