    Hi All,

    Hope you're ok?

I had a vaginal swab done the other day and have just called up now for my results. They have come back borderline for Group B Haemolytic Streptococcal. What I do but google it and have been to this website: http://www.pregnancy-bliss.co.uk/group_bhaemolyticstrep.html

This has terrified me. Has anyone any experience of it?

    I feel terrified :(

Hello moneypuddle! I'm 38 weeks today and was diagnosed with group b strep about 25 weeks pregnant as part of a high swab for thrush. hasn't meant much as here in Wales, they don't even give the antibiotics routinely anymore! Going to ask midwife again about it Friday to see if I can get the 4 hourly antibiotics and I hate injections.

As I understand it, and from my experience, I've had a lot more discharge and been more prone to thrush. Lots of people can have it and as it is not routinely tested for in UK, not even know. Those that do, have a 50% risk of passing it onto their babies in vaginal labour and of that 50% about 2% of babies can go on to develop more complications - some of the scaremongers will tell you about blood poisoning and meniningitis etc. Step away from the scary sites, and speak to your midwife!

one good site is group b strep support, http://www.gbss.org.uk/content.php?section_id=3&sub_id=15&content=FAQs and find out if your hosp does the intravenous antibiotics. You're more at risk if you go into labour preterm so 36 weeks or before so I didn't start taking any raspberry leaf tea capsules until 37 weeks but who knows what that means, if anything?

did you ask for test or was it just picked up? I stressed about it loads but apart from asking MW about it Friday, trying not to worry. xxx

"In 2010, there were an estimated 156 cases of listeriosis in England and Wales, 17 of which were in pregnant women." - so your odds are still quite small I'd guess...

And it doesn't say in how many of the pregnant women the listeriosis was transmitted to the baby.

I would think that McFlurrys would be OK, especially in summer, as the turnover of ice cream 'mix' would be very high as they're going to be used a lot. In winter I might be a little more wary.

It makes me really angry that relevant information isn't passed to women about risks in pregnancy on the basis that when our uterus is in use, our brain clearly shrinks and we can't make informed decisions on our own . The last significant outbreak of listeriosis was in America and it was caused by melons. If anyone can find me a guideline saying that we should avoid melons in pregnancy, I will give them a biscuit.

I have taken the decision to ignore ALL food advice based on risk, and only pay attention to the things which have been proven to be harmful. Therefore I'm eating whatever the hell I want except liver and liver products (too much Vitamin A = a bad thing), too much alcohol (risk of developmental problems, although at the moment it appears that you have to be a full on alchie to cause that...) and cigarettes. I had my steak mooing at a restaurant last week, and I've been eating sushi. It was delicious.

Obviously everyone should make their own decisions on how they want to approach it. I just got annoyed (and too many of my favourite things were on the 'risk of food poisoning' list. Dippy eggs, for example. And rare steak. And seafood...).

  • Aida - I'm glad scan went well and congrats on team pink!

Rups - the kicks will soon come and you'll probably wish they weren't there when you wake up in the middle of the time because of them!

Sam- it was me who asked about the free bottle! Thank you! I hope you enjoyed your chilling day.

Thank you Griggsy too. I'd signed up with Emma's diary too but never to the avent one, just done it though so hopefully I'll get it sooner rather than later;). Well done on finishing your uni work. I was planning on having the month before the baby is due off uni but you've inspired me to keep going!! I hope things start moving for you soon.

Cake4brains - well done on your bargain! Your dog is sooo cute! Unfortunately her diet wouldn't suit my dog, she has a sensitive tummy :(

Laura - lots of labour vibes coming your way!!

LittleMoog - I hope you're feeling better and you manage to have your baby at the midwifery led unit.

Sa-ra-ra-ra :T you've got my vote!! Btw, are we not supposed to have sushi? I thought you could provided it was made with smoked salmon... I was planning to have some next week.

Smoked salmon is on the no-no listeriosis list, quite specifically. And no, you're not supposed to have sushi.
  • Hi all. Just delurking to have my rant on food as well. If the advice was at all consistent or clear I would pay attention to it. But how that previous quote about cooked meat and smoked salmon having listeria ties in with the fact the NHS website says both are fine I have no idea. When I was first pregnant rare steak was OK, that has changed since Jan. So I am just trying to be sensible. And not checking if they have changed the advice on Stilton as there is no way I will stop eating that.

Anyway, hope all is well with everyone else. I have 11 days left at work, and only 3 when my boss is in - yay! Although I also have no flushing toilet, and no baby room as the new bathroom is sitting in there (and will be until at least 10 Sept - 2.5 weeks before due date -eek!) Anyone else totally disorganised? I have a car seat and some clothes - anything else is an added bonus right ;-)

Actually, I think you can have sushi because the fish used in this country has been deep frozen or something similar (I read it in The Times), which kills the parasites which are the risk factor. I'm not sure though; the guidelines change all the time.

Also, I don't understand why smoked salmon is on the no-no list (quite apart from the fact that the list itself seems to have been collated fairly randomly...) - the smoking process is carried out to kill germs and prolong the life of the fish. Provided it was smoked then packaged, presumably there are no problems with it?

    Hi all,

Haven't had any more signs of the plug so thin it was just a one off which is fine by my. Totally not ready for a good few weeks yet! Am exhausted today. Seem to do more on my days off then when I'm working. We popped to town to get some books for baby from the Charity Shop - my new favourite hobby! Then have spent the afternoon in the nursery. Cot and drawer is built and wall stickers up - looks fab!

Just got a problem now with how to keep the cats out of the room. Anyone got any tips? I don't want them sleeping in the cot/moses basket but if we shut the door then they pull the carpet up!

Was meant to be going to the Mothercare event tonight but am so knackered that I think we are going to stay in instead. I only wanted the 10% voucher to get the baby monitor but would be a wasted trip if that's all we were going for!

Another thing to avoid Rups is tiramisu (I was devastated when I learnt about this as it's one of my favourite desserts) and chocolate mousse, as they are made with raw eggs so could contain salmonella. Any unpasteurised soft cheeses and cheeses with mould should also be avoided. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Most shop bought tiramisu and mousses are made using pasterised dried egg do are fine. It's more freshly made ones and as has been said, if you make it with lion stamped eggs the hens have been vaccinated.

This page on the NHS website states as Sa-ra-ra-ra said that sushi is fine if it's made from previously frizzed fish. Also smoked fish (including salmon) is fine as the smoking process kills bacteria.

  • Re:food if I fancy it I eat it! The end! Dying to try wispa gold mcflurry too :) I don't normally eat a lot of the whippy ice cream, I prefer banana lollies from the ice cream man.
Bellola we need a pic of the nursery :) can't think of anything apart from getting a net for the crib so cat can't jump in? I got the stuff out in bubba's room earlier for the hospital bag and went back a few mins later and Hetty Bear and sleeping beside it lol.
LittleMoog glad your appt went well:)

Sorry cant really remember much apart from the talk of food :o and all I can hear is the ringing from the ice cream van!

Back from the drs. Even though it's an odd presentation he thinks it is Carpel tunnel. I'm glad it's nothing serious but hoping my fingers don't stay curled up for the next five or so weeks and the tingling in my left hand doesnt turn out the same. Two rubbish hips and one rubbish hand.
Well I'm going to wash my hair ready for my friend. Could be interesting one handed. Will take my 35 week bump photo one she has made me look beautiful!

I ate tons of smoked salmon when I was pg and Freddie's got all his fingers and toes. Although his middle toes look a bit mutant and his thumbs are enormous.
