OMG, just realised we can now say baby month is NEXT month!

Unless they decide to put in an early appearance! ;):p Can't believe it's August already!

I've read back but DH has given me his nasty cold germs so I have a really foggy head and can't remember much. I'm hoping I feel better tomorrow as we are going on the hospital tour and I don't want them to tell me I'm too germy to go :(

Can anyone recommend a really good book for the latter part of pregnancy, labour & delivery and the first few weeks? I've seen a good one for labour & delivery but would ideally like to only buy one book. Any suggestions would be gratefully received :)
How are the libraries in your area? Ours are great, you can reserve books online for free and then they get delivered to your nearest library when you can go fetch them. I enjoyed 'your baby week by week' but can't recall if there were any labour/delivery bits in it (I read all of those way back in the beginning of my pregnancy and am now reading all about weaning, breast feeding to follow next...). I also enjoyed the mumsnet pregnancy one (which I did read ages ago).

Guys just a word re BF - my baby didn't latch for 10 days. Yes that's right...10! Personally, I expressed...but if you want to breastfeed and it isn't working at the start, dont let the hospital think you HAVE to give a bottle, whether you are expressing or formula feeding. There are special cups that newborns can drink from (yes really!)

Final point from me, unless youre quite lucky, breastfeeding is damn hard work! Sometimes, you sit there feeling the physical drain as you get hungrier and thirstier by the minute!

Thanks Turtlemoose! I remember reading about the cups now, and how they were recommended to avoid nipple confusion :)
Is the breastfeeding helping you lose the baby weight at least if you can feel yourself getting hungrier and hungrier?

    Hey everyone.

Hope you're all okay. I haven't read back yet because my brain is foggy!

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced flashing lights before their eyes in their pregnancies? I'm experiencing it and Googling has just got me worried (why do I never learn?!).

My midwife appointment isn't until the 20th August so I don't really want to wait until then, but I also don't want to seem like I'm worrying over nothing. =/

At my booking in my midwife asked about migraines/flashing lights etc, which I get occasionally. She told me that I should ring someone every time it happened, even though it's normal for me. I've only had 1 migraine since then, and I went to bed to sleep it off and forgot to ring them :o It was only when DH got home and asked if I'd rung that I remembered I was meant to, and it had cleared up by then!

I think it's because it can be due to high blood pressure, so I would ring the midwife/day assessment unit if you can, and get checked out?

Dizsie, sorry you're still feeling so grotty, it's miserable being sick all the time :o Hope the rest of your day is better. I'm 25 weeks now, and I'm still sick randomly 1/2 times a week, but it's more bearable.

Re: GTT, my midwife wrote in my notes at booking in that I'd need it at 28 weeks due to raised BMI, and when I had my 24 week appointment last week she rang through to the hospital and booked me in. I've also got to have all the other 28 week bloods done at the same time. My 28 week midwife appointment will take place at 29 weeks so we can review all the test results.

I don't think the timing is crucial, as if you had gest. diabetes you'd still have it whenever they did the test, but I expect if you need it your midwife will book you in at your next appointment - all mine did was ring the bloods department and see what days they had slots available. Then she gave me a sheet with the instructions on, and the cards for the various blood tests.

About your baby starving - you will probably be able to hand express enough colostrum to get you through the early days. Your hospital should teach you how (and provide syringes for collection), but if you we like to be prepared, google it. If you have the same leaflet I had from the midwife it does not explain it well!!!

Have a read of the kellymom website - its surprising how little colostrum baby actually needs to get them through the first days - so do not panic if it does not seem like you are gushing pints of the stuff. Baby's tummy will be very small to start with, and colostrum is dense stuff (so is breastmilk actually, an expressed bottle is surprisingly heavy) - its packed with all sorts if goodies and your baby will need nowhere near the same amount that they would need if having formula.

If you end up with an extended stay courtesy of the NHS and you are expressing, do not let the scary paediatricians who have had no breastfeeding training bully you in to the amounts required, I've said it once and I will say it again in a different way, your baby, ml for ml, needs less breastmilk than formula.

After a really bad experience it makes me cross when NHS professionals give out wrong advice.

Stick to your guns and ask a second, third, fifteenth opinion. Then google it, then look on the kellymom website, and THEN decide what to do.

Also, dr jack Newman - look him up - videos on latching, positioning etc, very useful and actually teaches you what to look for to know baby is drinking etc.

Final point from me, unless youre quite lucky, breastfeeding is damn hard work! Sometimes, you sit there feeling the physical drain as you get hungrier and thirstier by the minute! Sometimes, your baby will want to eat every 45 mins. Your nipples will probably hurt (get your latch checked by a pro, and invest in some lansinoh - its magic stuff and well worth the price) at the start but the soon toughen up.

Reuben was 8 weeks on Monday and i am just starting to enjoy BFing. He now interacts with me while eating - eye contact, the odd grin, holds on to my t shirt or boob....and this week makes me so glad i perservered through the tough early weeks!
Or constant not allowing you topee like mine !!

zcrat - a ratchet? no, actually, I don't want to know!!!

dizsie, that's terrible. I can imagine people just ignoring you if they think you're drunk but stopping and watching (and not helping) isn't fair even if they think you are! One of my friends fainted on the tube and had no assistance from anyone while she was pregnant. Hope you're feeling better!

As for the formula thing in hospital, there are signs up in our antenatal area of the hospital saying that you need to bring your own and IIRC it can't be powder due to possible hygiene issues, I think they want sealed pre-mixed formula. If you need to express though I think they will hire you a pump.

Snowy, enjoy greens! It's close to us but we've never managed to make it there, it's on the list of things to do though!

As for GTT, I noticed in my book-in notes that it was ticked that I didn't need one (I'm probably low risk for diabetes as I'm low BMI and have no family history of diabetes).

My maternity swimming costume from jojo maman bebe arrived last night, it's really nice :) Was a bit concerned it wouldn't hold my boobs in enough, but I couldn't find any cup sized/wired maternity swimwear. It's a halterneck though, and if I do it up tight enough it holds everything in! :rotfl: Off for a swim tonight.

Last week I told the midwife that I had really itchy nipples (sorry tmi!) and she gave me a prescription in case it was thrush. I've been using the canestan cream on my nipples for a week, and the itching is totally gone :j I feel like my sanity has been restored, as it was unbearable before. Skin is still a little dry/flaky looking but that's a side effect of the cream so I've switched to normal moisturiser twice a day.

Savage re weight loss, I think everyone is different, but for me yes once my supply was established it just fell off, however I seem to have reached a plateau and nothing more is coming off. However, as Reuben is only 8 weeks old, I haven't tried losing on purpose yet - I'm sure if I moved a little more and had a few less choccy bars thn the loss would continue :)

LMM they won't choke, honest :) you don't actually pour the milk in their mouths, you tip it (it's a special cup not any ordinary one) until the milk just touches their gum (sort of sits between their bottom lip and gum), wait a bit, then they stick their tongues out and lap at it. It's amazing to see and I didn't really believe it til I saw it! My boy was so used to the cup that after a few days he used to slurp it up too...:D
