I was thinking maybe buying a couple of those little cartons of milk and pre sterilised disposable bottles as a back up. But surely the hospital want let baby starve if it doesn't work and OH could work a steriliser?
Hi, I'm not sure if all hospitals are the same, but ours gives out the little glass bottles of formula and a sealed disposable sterilised teat. I BF, but my LO wouldn't latch on at all for nearly 3 days, so I supplemented with formula until the third day and kept trying the BF in between. The lady who delivered the formula bottles every day gave us a few extra to take home. It's all free.
A word of warning. I managed to BF for nearly 8 months, but the use of bottles in the first few days meant my DD was used to the shape of a bottle teat and I ended up using a nipple shield, as she would not BF otherwise. It was a means to an end, but a bit of extra faffing. This time if I need to top up (hopefully I won't, but I'm not against mix feeding) I'll use a little cup and pour the formula into baby's mouth. It's recommended for BF so baby doesn't get "nipple confusion".
OK, that's my tuppence worth! How's everyone today? Any labour signs?
I watched that Midwife show on BBC2 last night and it freaked me out. I'm having a section and that lady who was booked in for a section and then ended up with a forceps delivery totally freaked me out. A forceps delivery is my worst nightmare. Did you see the force the doctor was putting into pulling the baby out? How can that not damage the babies neck? I's like my Dad pulling a calf out by tying rope round the front legs:eek:!0 -
No more
Contraction type pains last night. Had very restless sleep tho. Bump was quite achy. Today my back is sore and I still hae period type pains but more of an ache.
Hopefully oh being off today will make life a bit easier today.
Hugs to all xlove you lots like jelly tots0 -
Guys just a word re BF - my baby didn't latch for 10 days. Yes that's right...10! Personally, I expressed...but if you want to breastfeed and it isn't working at the start, dont let the hospital think you HAVE to give a bottle, whether you are expressing or formula feeding. There are special cups that newborns can drink from (yes really!) And mine managed his first ten days with one, regaining all but 1% of his whopping 12% weight loss by the time we went home.
Also, if you are struggling and your hospital isn't that supportive, ask if there are any breastfeedng network volunteers. You won't feel like it at the time, but you CAN be pushy about it, after all this is your baby we are talking about.
Final point from me, unless youre quite lucky, breastfeeding is damn hard work! Sometimes, you sit there feeling the physical drain as you get hungrier and thirstier by the minute! Sometimes, your baby will want to eat every 45 mins. Your nipples will probably hurt (get your latch checked by a pro, and invest in some lansinoh - its magic stuff and well worth the price) at the start but the soon toughen up.
Reuben was 8 weeks on Monday and i am just starting to enjoy BFing. He now interacts with me while eating - eye contact, the odd grin, holds on to my t shirt or boob....and this week makes me so glad i perservered through the tough early weeks!0 -
CL - Watching forceps births scare me for the same reason. I know how much effort goes into a ratchet too and I get worried about feeling like a cow!0

What is wrong with some people??? I was just very sick (on my clothes too) on my way into work in the street and rather than a) go about their own business or b) ask me if I am ok … they just stopped and watched!
I’m 24 weeks now and still being sick every day…. I am just fed up of the sickness and the sore tum that goes with it plus the pain of the PGP (SPD) and being constantly kicked in my cervix!… why is my baby boy causing me so much grief ladies???
If you don’t have the GTT test by 28 weeks can they still do it? I haven’t got an appt for it yet and I’m not due to see the midwife again until 26 weeks so not sure when I will get one?
LMM – My hospital insist on you taking pre sterilised readymade bottles or your entire steriliser and bottles and formula just in case you can’t feed the baby. They don’t actually have any to give you so yes…your baby would starve.:jBaby Boy born December 20120 -
its a horrible world, when people don't even care about other people and not check your ok. Hope your feeling ok now?
I dont know about watching the midwife programme, see how i feel later.
Counsellor went ok yesterday, she kept interrupting me, i would be half way though answering one questions and she'd ask another. She is writing to my doctor to see about tablets, as i dont think i have the energy/time to try CBT again, especially when the baby arrives. I'm nervous about tablets due to the risk of birth defects, and plus it will take 3-4 weeks till they kick in anyway. She mentioned about going back to work at all, and i said they if it was Sept then i would probably say yes, i'm happy not to go back, but i've got 10 weeks till baby is here, and 7 weeks till i'm due to start maternity leave, and really dont know if sitting at home all day will help me.
My plan for today is to pack all DD holiday clothes, she is off to cyprus on Friday with OH for his brothers weddingAnd leaving me at home. I could have probably gone, but when we booked it we didn't know how the pregnancy would go, and plus i dont think i could cope with the heat.
DD is staying at her grandmas tonight, so me and OH are going to Greens (Simon Rimmers resturant) for tea, its veggie and we are anything but veggie but so nice.Mummy to Isabella - March 2008 and Daisie - September 2012:A - November 2011 (mc)0 -
OMG, just realised we can now say baby month is NEXT month!
Bellola one word - behave! :rotfl:I've still got ages to go..la la la
Dizsie hope you're feeling better. And not too covered in sicknot everyone has a GTT, I haven't as my my risk of diabetes is low and I've had no symptoms. Has the midwife/dr said you need one? You have bloods at 28 weeks so they may book it at that appointment for you. It won't be the end of the world if you have it at 29 weeks if you're well.
I will check re:bottles then. I'll add it to my list of questions for next week. Can't believe a hospital would let a baby go hungry! If baby doesn't latch I would like to express if possible I forget about using a cup. I'd be scared of choking the baby :-S Thank you for your advice:j Baby boy arrived 22nd August 2012 :j

Ditzie That's pants that people can be so uncaring. How much effort does it take to see if someone is alright and could do with a bit of help.0

Hope all are doing well

If yours last any longer than that I'd get them checked out - in the 2nd half of pregnancy it could be pre-eclampsia, which while unlikely is not something you want to miss!!0
