A nanny will set you back £100 quid a day...

How am I going to get to heaven?,

We pay just shy of £700 a month for 2 days a week at a council subsidised nursery, and 1 day with a childminder.

Unless your mum is like me and says an outright no to looking after your child.. an emergency or one off is one thing but a couple of times a week.. no ta!

I wouldn't want my mother looking after my child - goodness no - I believe if you have one - then its your responsibility - whether SAHM or paying for childcare. But having the support or even knowing that they will be there in an emergency or just to have a chat with when things aren't going to plan.... thats what I miss.

Yes how did you guess? :D

One of the so-called 'best' private nurseries round here charge £74 per day...oh and you have to provide your own nappies and formula milk (if necessary). They'll provide cows milk when your child is old enough to have it.

Its utterly ridiculous, yet the waiting lists are 18 months+, and the daft yummy-mummies whose husbands earn silly money all fight to get their kids in there.

I went to have a look round just out of curiosity, and did indeed put my name on the list (as I was panicking about not finding a nursery spot..had to pay a non-refundable £25 for the pleasure of even doing that!). I got a call about 16 months later asking if I was still interested. I said no thank you (very politely). My son was well settled into his subsidised nursery by then and with a local childminder.

It's still eye-wateringly expensive, but sadly the price you pay in the Capital.

I forgot to mention that the nursery in question was very nice..but no nicer than the one I finally settled on. Maybe a bit plusher, but it's a lot of extra money to pay for a slightly posher venue!

ETA: Anyone planning on a 3D/4D baby scan? There's a deal for it on groupon in Glasgow today and there's part of me going "OMG I WANT IT" and then a (slightly more rational) part going "Eh...why?"

We haven't had one, but in our parent classes 2 out of 5 couples have. THey said it's lovely, but the rest of us weren't that fussed. Don't know if you could say that their face is the same as when they come out as they're pretty squished in there. Also MW was quite anti as it's not hospital clinical staff that do the scan, so if something out of the ordinary is picked up what do they do? Also counts as an unnecessary procedure so exposing LO to more radiation (esp heat) than should be needed. That said, must be wonderful to see LO in a bit more detail.

Is there no one else planning a homebirth??? I was told nowadays 1 in 6 1st babies are homebirths! Am I mad for considering it???!!

I don't think homebirths are as out of the ordinary as I had initially thought they were. I think if it'll mean you're more relaxed and comfortable it's definitely something to consider. It was suggested at our classes that even if you plan for homebirth, it's probably only going to happen 50% of the time as any complications and they'll have you into hospital, so not like you'll be stranded with just you OH and MW. I think defo have a chat with MW to discuss options. See what you think. (It's mostly the thought of having to clean up after that puts me off!!!)

The nursery we've got in mind is just over £40 per day (ish... I think) but has a loooong waiting list. Could be suggested to go in whilst still pregnant to secure a place, but a superstitious part of me thinks that may just be bad luck. Intend to go in soon after the birth though, probably reserve 4 days per week as I'd have to find other cover for Saturdays, and then I can reduce the days if I can secure PT work.... I hope to only do 4 days per week, but we'll see!

AFM I've now begun my 4 weeks annual leave before mat leave begins, and only about 1 month to go. Bump is definitely growing as now feeling it squishing under my ribs, but all in all I'm pretty lucky. Hopefully the labour and the baby will be as well behaved as the pregnancy!

hey all, claire how are you feeling now? shame they couldn't have been nicer to you, don't let it put u off if you're worried again.I just had a little look in my diary and it was about 19 wks when i was sure I was feeling lots of movement so do try no to worry.
OMG I did not know childcare was so pricey. OH owns a business he is currently tryin to sell and will probably make money from doing up vans/cars/houses when he has the money freed and my shifts are two days of 12 then 2 nights of 12 so would really only be away from the baby those 2 days and if they fit around him and my family on weekends I might be able to avoid the nursery route, though might put babyin once in a while for the experience.
Anyone know how we get exemption cards to show the dentist? I have been given my matb1 but nothing else.
Lovecake I checked myself on that calculator and feel better now, it's good to see some guidelines taking height into account. I have put 13 ilbs on now at 27 wks so it's on the low end of the guideline but not drastically. It's all bump though so far, fingers crossed hey.

Haha! I was thinking of leaving that to the other half!!:D

I think the bit that scares me the most at a hospital is the fact that if the lovely birthing suites are in use - then you get a grotty old room that looks as if it was set up for an old person in the 1960s - no room hardly for a birthing ball/active birth - just a bed and a chair.

I have to do my birth plan next week so will speak to MW - but plans never go smoothly do they....!:o

    .

Mine came through really early on - around 12 weeks I think - MW applied for it for me. Ask your MW - its their responsibility - and once applied for - should only take 2-3 weeks to come through.
