Hallo ladies, hope your week is progressing well. Welcome to the new graduates to this thread :)

I'm exhausted this week and had a question for non first timers - is it a normal part of pregnancy to get swollen feet and ankles? I'm now 31weeks. My bp is stable (I measure it daily) and I'm still able to get my rings on and off so my hands are fine but since Sat my feet and ankles have been swelling through the day and get quite uncomfortable. I'm due to see the mW on Monday but wasn't sure if I should ring before then?

My day off tomorrow, thank goodness as not sure I'd manage going in to work, and seeing the osteo again.

    Thank you ladies

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hello everyone!
Yep Saffagal, I've had swollen ankles and feet for a few weeks now & you're right if no other swelling and it goes down you're ok I think. You need to try and elevate your legs as much as you can to keep it down. I now sit down more at work & sit with my feet up on the sofa after work in the evenings.... even now sleep with a pillow under my feet at night to try and keep it down as the other weekend I over did it with my niece and nephew and they we still really puffy on the Monday morning, get quite uncomfy as joint gets really tight.
Had the 1st of our parenting classes last night. Covered what to put in your hospital bag and baby movements and what to do. Kind of reassuring and useful, but thanks to all the good advice on here alot was already familiar.
I've had a couple of nights of leg cramps.... not nice! But started exercising them with rolling my ankles and stretching my legs to try and help and they seem to have eased.
Chonorla - good news on the sickness easing, hopefully will soon be passed.
Good luck to everyone due soon.

Well the specialist midwife appointment was a waste of time... lots of "there there it'll be different this times" and absolutely no concrete reassurance I wouldn't get redirected to the hellhole that did all the damage to me, no reassurance about how they'll handle things if I need another neo-natal stay, nothing at all - and she's not happy I pointed out I wouldn't be consenting to another forceps delivery (having researched I'm not happy with taking the risk of that after having such a large tear and cut relatively recently regarding incontinence etc) I've said if that issue arises then they can flipping well give me a section - she's passing that one back to the consultant, who no doubt will call me giving me earache for that point-blank refusal to consider letting them whip out the salad tongs... if I have to I'll start quoting the NICE guidelines at them. More than anything else - I don't trust them regarding issues of consent to things like episiotomies - they pulled that stunt before doing one without consent - after explicitly reinforcing 10 minutes previously that they could not do one without asking me.

She is, however, horrified at the stunt they pulled regarding social services and is escalating that one up to the head of midwifery - at least it was a bit more validation that I did utterly nothing to deserve what they pulled there. Doesn't stop the nightmares or the feeling of utter powerlessness over it all - and I really don't think she realises her "oh it's a second baby and you'll labour quickly" is NOT reassurance when you have to get grandparents down from 4 hours away to watch the sibling, and you're talking to someone terrified of having another preemie!

About the one concession I got was a note on my file to try to avoid redirecting me to hellhole hospital - I don't for a second think anyone will pay ANY attention to this whatsoever - but that's ALL I got in the way of helping me deal with anxiety/phobia/trauma.

Utter waste of time and parking money.

Dizzi.. I think that about most appointments. If there was no specific cause for your last early arrival there is no guarantee this one won't be 2 weeks late.. mine were.. 40, 37, 32, 34, 31, 35, 34, 35, 37 and 35 weeks.. they varied hugely.. apparently I make crappy thin membranes that are broken by the baby wriggling about.. they don't know why or anything it is just that is how it is. I understand you are more concerned about the treatment you will receive than whether baby is early or not.. how long were you in with her? I was in a week with my 32 weeker and 3 weeks with 31 weeker.. I had both at Leeds general which was by far preferable to the cattle market here, 45 miles away but heyho.. I wanted to go there for the last 2 and they refused to do the referral.

I discharged myself against medical advice when I was in labour at 32 weeks with DS2 because they wanted to send me to the nearer NICU and I was not under any circumstances going to that place.. so there are ways around these things.. you can say no and you can walk out and take yourself elsewhere and you can request they try elsewhere first.

I wasn't asked about an episiotomy with DS1.. and DD1 was not asked about hers.. though I did tell them to just do it otherwise she would panic about it... and I told her afterwards. I think that is common practice regardless of what they say.

Was in for 2 weeks (not allowed to leave the ward at all - chained to the baby basically) - on an utter hellhole post-natal ward and scrutinised all the time because of the social services referral with everything I did being logged for any evidence of me being a bad parent or whatever. Fights, people being kicked off the ward - all sorts went on in the bay I was dumped on - plus I was the freak show people gawked at the size of the baby for as well.

Would have been longer but I asked for a bottle and teat to feed her some expressed milk - they'd have happily kept me in another 2 weeks+ trying desperately to breastfeed a baby with a tongue tie they never picked up on with no support whatsoever.

I've given up - the only way I can escalate things is to the supervisor of midwives - I don't have the strength (or the guts after the social services crap) to fight things that much higher. I don't think either me or hubby can take what went on happening again - hell, it almost shredded our relationship last time and he's pretty traumatised by it all still now (in as much as he'll talk about it).

At least if I went near term I'd be treated as more of a person than an inconvenient bit of meat blocking the neo-natal team from their interesting baby I guess - hospital's line seems to be very much that if it's a preemie - the mother doesn't matter, apart from to be detained alongside... they even detain you while the baby is IN NICU so it's not even as if it's just rooming in prior to discharge - it's total captivity.

Right now I feel so hopeless about it all that if I didn't have the noisy giggly one I'd be jumping off the nearest bridge (we don't have cliffs being land-locked).

No I think the 'mother doesn't matter' is widespread.. that is the same everywhere.. I've been to 5 different hospitals and that is all I have heard.

If you had left her you would probably have found she was in longer anyway.. so to those ends it was better you stayed. i stayed with all mine. The NICU here doesn't have parent rooms so the mothers are literally kicked out asap and are allowed to visit 9-9 each day.. the babies are left in vomit, crying, dirty as they are changed every other feed so in reality could be left in poo for 6 hours. When Fabian was in they neglected to feed him a couple of times!!!!!

It sounds like you would benefit from OH taking more control and telling them what you want rather than doing as you are both told.. or a strong minded friend or relative who will fight your corner.. in all possibility though you might not have this one early.. it isn't written in stone. my 34 weekers were only in a couple of days.. a week makes a huge difference.

oh dizzi, I don't have any real words of advice and can only suggest that you ensure your husband is aware of your wishes so that he can support you over the next few weeks and more particularly, through delivery. I'm sending you a great big virtual hug xx

Chonorla, fingers crossed regarding your sickness - that sounds like great progress!

Lazywife and pigpen, thank you both for the reassurance regarding my swelling feet. They do go down if I sit with them up and overnight, but on the days I'm in work it is really uncomfortable when driving home as it restricts my ankle movement. I'm under a consultant who has told me to contact her (via email) if I have any issues; except I'm not quite sure what counts as an ' issue' and what is normal not having done this before. As I appreciate that she is busy and has a lot of other patients, I don't want to bother her - the same goes for the midwife so will have a chat on Monday when I see her again.

Had my second appt with the osteo today and he's happy with the progress since my first appt and is leaving it up to me as to whether or not I need another appt. I would definitely recommend trying an osteopath if you've spd and can - it really made a difference.

My manager is on AL now till after I've started my leave so she popped in to give baby a present; 2 giraffe babygrows (because we're both Saffa's)! It was very thoughtful of her and they're so cute! I'm getting very excited now... and just three weeks and 1 day till my leave starts!

I've been waffling, sorry ladies! Hope that you've all had a good day (and dizzi, hope that your evening improves as you spend it with your special giggly, girl)

Hugs to those who need it, and labour vibes to those that need them
