    Hi

    onthebeach.

I had an ecv today (37 weeks exactly). It didn't work she would turn a quater turn then move back again. It was ok. It hurt a bit but was bearable and I feel a little bruised now. Was at the hospital for about 3 hrs as they monitor the heart trace for a while before and after.

Now we have to decide between a c-section or vaginal breech birth. Does anyone have any experience of either? What were your experiences?

Still waiting for a date to move house. Hoping to exchange contracts this week.

On the plus side I saw a breast feeding lady at the hospital and she gave me sone tiny syringes to try and hand express colostrum. My midwife suggested it as I have gestational diabetes and this can apparently make the baby slow to feed. It will hopefully mean the hospital won't give her formula.

    Thanks
    Carrie

The hospital will push you to a section. Breech births are a little tricky and you usually end up with forceps to deliver the head without putting too much strain on the neck. They are so keen to do sections to deliver breech babies now there are few midwives who have any decent experience of it.

If baby is feet first a section is way safer, footling breech means the feet can pop out very early in labour and the baby is more likely to try to breathe before the rest of the body and head are delivered.

If baby is bottom first I'd attempt a normal delivery.. recovery is quicker and it is less damaging to the internal organs. You would have to very very firm to stick to your guns though they try all sorts of tactics. I was assured my breech baby would be brain damaged due to oxygen starvation and allsorts.

  • Thanks. I believe she is frank breech. Head up, bottom down, back on my right, legs straight ish on my left.

I'm guessing that if I went for a natural delivery I would need to hire a midwife that is practised in delivering breech baby's. I think the hospital would be very consultant led - flat on your back with an epidural and probably episiotomy and forceps. From what I have read this doesn't seem like the best way to deliver a breech baby.

Pigpen - can I ask what happened - feel free to pm me.

    Thanks

All fours is the best way to deliver breech by all accounts.

My daughter ended up with cerebral palsy but that has nothing to do with her being breech. My sister and cousin and ex-bil were all breech too and perfectly fine, though my cousin was very battered and bruised after delivery

  • That's reassuring thanks. I've already decided that if I doesn't work, I will opt for the c section. I don't want to attempt a breech birth as would be too worried about that ending in an emergency c section.
  • Morning, quick question when I've got 5 mins,

I last saw a midwife at 24 weeks and I haven't got a appointment till 36 weeks does ne think this is to much of a long wait? As I'm in two minds to phone them up? This is my 3rd pregnancy
  • Hi ladies! Hope all is well and babies are behaving :)

Helen That seems like an awful long time to wait! This is my first so I dont really know but I had 20, 24, 28, 32. Having 34, 36, 38, 39, 40 and hopefully baby will be on time and i wont need more :D 12 weeks is a long time though, I would give MW a phone, can't do any harm i suppose :)

AFM I had my 32+3 MW appointment yesterday, measuring 34 by tape measure method but MW not concerned. Baby is 1/5 engaged and in the right position for birth (good baby!). Then had 2nd antenatal class and wrote my birth plan. Glad that's out of the way :)

I see the MW 3 weekly - but that's her going above and beyond the expected for a 2nd timer since she knows about my anxiety/mental health issues, the previous awful delivery and prematurity so she keeps me on a close watch for that reason alone (tends to ring me a lot as well - but she's fab).

Bumps make good pillows for poor snuffly little Misses as well apparently - little big girl's got a horrible icky cold just suddenly hit her and is lying absolutely draped across my stomach getting a cuddle.
Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!
  • Helen, NICE guidelines state that all women should be seen at 28,34,36 and 41 weeks if you've not given birth. As dundeediva says first time mums do get more appointments but you are entitled to be seen at the times I've mentioned above.

helen4891 - No that is right for a 3rd pregnancy. As you know I am on my 4th baby and have seen mine very little - I did query it and she showed me the guidelines they go by for each pregnancy. I have seen mine 3 times and I am 31 weeks and will see her again at 36 weeks after I have seen the Consultant to discuss what has been decided re induction etc

    It doesn't seem a lot know :(
