Well... hell of a day today turned out to be.

Mother text me to remind me that I needed to phone up to check that the doc had seen my blood work from last Monday as my iron (though mw said ferrous?) levels were low. So rang up... heard a bit of a crash and a silence... woman had dropped the phone lol!
She said best to ring back tomorrow morning as the results had only just come back and that the doctor probably wouldn't see them until then so I said fine. Carried on walking around town.
5 min later... *bring bring* "Hi, just us down ante natal. Doctor has seen your bloods and wants you to have an iron transfusion done at the hospital (not my local but a larger one down the road)." Well I said ok, but what happens if I need to come in before you can sort the tranfusion out? I've only got just under a week left... "You have!? We've got you down as 36 weeks. Well we'll get you in before then anyway. Call you back and let you know about it later."
So great stuff! Phone my mother to let her know, panic everyone in the office as she's nipped out and her mobile is ringing and they all think it's me going into labour. Explain it to her, she says we'll sort out a lift and things to go there so I'll have someone with me as OH might not get the time off work.
Decide to go to my Dad's from town. He text me to see if I'm ok just as I start driving... as I'd told him I was only popping to town and that was ages ago. Get half way and he rings >< so I jab my phone and shout DRIVING!!! and it hangs up. Get there and explain everything. Was just about to ask him to put the kettle on and *bring bring* "Ante natal again... doctor has changed his mind. He now knows you're 39 weeks not 36, looking at your bloods your iron has gone to 10.2 from 9.something. Can you come and get more bloods done?" Right ok... what time do you shut? "Get here by 4 and we can give you the forms. Bring your notes too so we can put stuff in it." This is at 3... So didn't get my hot chocolate. Left straight away and went to the hospital. Finally have bloods done at half 4. Gotta ring in the morning now to see what they're gonna do.
Dunno if it's gonna be a transfusion now or not. Suppose I'll just find out in the morning ><

Anyone know much about bloods? I've got a few high and low results on my form...

  • Thought we'd have a list today so that Aida can be a boldie and hoping by now she is having fabulous mummy cuddles!

Bamama - can offer no advice about iron levels but can't believe what a carpy day you've had of it. I'm considering not telling my family anything as the panic that was caused by the monitoring I had last week was ridic! I had repeat bloods at 28 weeks and still do not know the results yet but seeing MW on Friday so I'm sure they will fill me in. At my 8 week appointment the bloods I had then we just below the low end of the scale and I asked if that was ok and they said yes, so no idea what becomes acceptable and what doesn't when it comes to iron levels????

Hope you are feet firmly up and resting now.

Exciting stuff mushypeas the countdown is really on now, Wednesday will soon be here, I like how you've not told many people about your new date. I am hoping if I go over then I will get away with not telling many people as the thought of texts, calls or people turning up fills me with dread

Been to last of NHS antenatal classes today, covered baby first aid, choking and bathing a baby with a chat with the mental health team. Now I'm scared that there are no more classes, well I am doing NCT but not till early Feb!

If anything was wrong with your repeats I'm sure they woulda contacted you. Iron under 10 seems to be when they worry and put you on tablets.

It's very hard not to tell my mother things as she works in the hospital. Admittedly I could just sneak in past the office but most of the porters and reception staff know me. Imagine how happy she'd be if someone told her I was there? Lol!

Bamama - I think it is something like 11.2 is the acceptable level for iron. At 10.2 I was described as mildly anaemic and put on a 200mg tablet of ferrous sulphate which kept my iron levels at 10.2 - it was increased to 2 x 200mg of ferrous sulphate which raised my iron to 11.5 in a week. I'd be surprised if they wanted to give you a transfusion for iron levels in the 10's (I may be wrong of course!) - I'm sure someone on here had one because their iron was 7 or 8 and she was close to delivery. Hopefully they just whack you on an iron tablet for a week or so. I think you can have 3 x 200mg per day (I'm not recommending that in a medical way by the way just stating what I think to be correct!).

Queen_B - Baby first aid sounds so sensible. Our final class was on baby and child brain development which whilst interesting it could have been delivered via DVD at home (like the breastfeeding bit!) - baby first aid would have been much more useful! Wish they kept them all the same!

Aida - Hope you are having loads of baby cuddles and hope you are recovering well :)

As for me, sorry for making everyone laugh/choke about the mucus plug :rotfl: I am feeling much, much better - have improved steadily all day so hoping for more of the same tomorrow. Actually feel like doing a bit of tidying and a few of the final jobs I need to do before induction. Also feel I could manage to labour a baby too whereas yesterday I wouldn't have managed anything, it was a chore going to the loo! Get well soon vibes to all sickies !

As for repeat bloods/urine tests - I've found that no news tends to be good news but here you can always ring the surgery to make sure things are ok. The couple of times I've had low iron or contaminated samples, they've contacted me via letter.

Bamama - I think it is something like 11.2 is the acceptable level for iron.

10.5 is the minimum for a pregnant woman before they ask you to have treatment (iron transfusion/tablets). Non-pregnant people usually have a higher level.

Iron transfusions are often for severly anaemic women but as you are so close to EDD they may decide that it is the best therapy rather than tablets as not everyone can tolerate tablets.

Mine was 9.something and they put me on 210mg ferrous fumarate x 3 a day. I wasn't very good at taking them to begin with but have been for the last month or so and it's up to 10.2. They would have sent me for a transfusion if I was 36 not 39 weeks. That could be to do with other results too though.

LadyM had a transfusion I believe because hers got very low plus she's so slim and I don't think she was gaining much weight... like she was running on fumes lol.

Ahh sorry, misunderstood your post - I didn't realise you had already been on the tablets! Hope it all sorts itself out.

LadyM - yes that's who it was, my memory isn't so bad after all!

They were very pleased with my 14.5 iron levels at booking in and refer to them regularly as "excellent" before I point out that I'd been on 8 tablets since 4 weeks pregnant so no wonder they were excellent! Then they took me off them and wondered why they'd dropped! Doh!
