My wife and I are in the same boat at present with our 17 year old. He had been working in a part time job but that has ended and he has no focus during the summer until Tech starts again in September.

Our son has added complications with ADHD and has been aggressive and intimidating and he basically think she can do as he pleases and come and go when he wants sometimes for days at a time. He comes in late at night (1am) waking up the house and this is completely unacceptable.

There is little we can do while he still has money to use but once this runs out he will need to pay for his phone, days/nights out and whatever other luxuries he has become accustommed to.

This is when he will find out that he can't simply do as he pleases while he is not financially independent and he will be expected to do something in return for any money he is due to receive. EMA has stopped too so unless he gets another job, which is looking extremely difficult at present, he will have to co-operate more.

I would quite happily lock the door at a certain hour and refuse to let him in but my wife is concerned that he will start a fuss. We both have early mornings and the lack of sleep at times is exhausting and stressful without even contemplating what he is doing/taking when he is away.

Our next hurdle is to get him to go on holiday with us in a week after him saying he was staying at home. He won't be in our home on his own. We believe that he is very vulnerable and impressionable while out in the company of older adolescents but he thinks he is indestructible.

Tech starting again can't happen soon enough.
