Agreed, he was spot on as Rochester. I watched the Cary Fukunaga adaptation recently. It was ok but much as I :heart2: Michael Fassbender I don't think he worked as Rochester.

I :heart2: Tom Hardy as well, but he didn't work as Heathcliff either. The only actor that's come close to being Heathcliff was Ralph Fiennes.

Hm, I think that Ian McShane as Heathcliffe was pretty spooky, and quite delish! - (Ahem, I might be showing my age here now!)

Lovejoy as Heathcliff? I'm relieved to say I've not seen that version :rotfl:

I said I was showing my age - it was done in 1967 a good 19 years earlier than Lovejoy!!!

this is going back years - but I thought Hollywood had lost the plot when they cast Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook in 'Hook'. Turned out to be inspired casting! But then Hoffman CAN act! Bob Hoskins as Smee was brilliant - the only one I thought was a bit miscast was Robin Williams as Peter - he just seemed to old to have such a young family!

Totally agree about Reacher and Banks.
I had in mind a younger version of a Harrison Ford/Clint Eastwood type of character for Reacher and someone like the late great Bob Peck (Edge of Darkness) for Banks.
I'll stick with the books for now.

I can sympathise with the film maker who doesn't stick the book's plot.

If they followed the plot faithfully, the film would be too long or be expensive to make.

I went to see HP1 as a fan of the book and I was really disappointed because it missed/changed so many elements of the book.

But I then went to see it again with an open mind. The film wasn't half bad and the plot held together.

I would suggest film and books are different genres. Pictures can be built up in books that might have to be encompassed in once scene in a film.

My experience with HP1 is to treat a film in its own right and not compare it to the book.

why? you read the book and go to see the film and its completely different..............what a let down, as you said yourself.
Why buy film rights to a book then make a film which bears no resemblance to the book? Does not make sense.
I read the Harry Potter books - initially to make sure they were suitable reading for the kids - I didnt think that the first Harry Potter film strayed too far from the book - and subsequent films have stayed with the plot -but scenes have changed. but the films still make sense to the book readers.

Other hollywood adaptations of books are almost unrecognisable. Take Mrs Doubtfire for instance - the film was very popular - but is NOTHING like the book - only the basic premise. disappointing for the book fans - and then the people who loved the film didnt like the book!

I found Morgan Freeman perfect as Red in The Shawshank Redemption, funny as he was a white Irish man in the original story!
    Kate short for Bob.

  • I pictured Ray Stevenson (aka Titus Pullo in the series, Rome) when I read them.
I think he'd have made a decent film version of Reacher or even Gerard Butler would have been suitable, but TC?????

I've just remembered the worst bit of casting ever! Billie Piper as Fanny Price in a TV adaptation of Mansfield Park - what a travesty!
