Maybe airlines should just make you pay the departure tax when you get to the airport then.

Anyone complaining about this new tax should never fly from the UK again, because the UK's flying tax is the highest in the world.

Please no, imagine the chaos of having thousands of passengers line up to pay in the airport.

Interesting. Some governments used to do this - collect the tax in cash as you depart. I use Saigon alot - and you'd pay your US$6 (as it was then) to a bloke who'd give you a stamped voucher which would then be torn in half by another bloke as you entered the security area.

You were VERY AWARE of how much tax you were paying and there is something endearing about paying cash in person to a tax collector.

Yep. Be it APD, income tax (via PAYE), VAT or pretty much every other kind of tax, the system seems designed to mask from people how much tax they really pay. Governments prefer businesses to have to do their dirty work for them.

A big difference between having a system in place permanently and setting it up temporarily though. I imagine many Spanish airports would not be equipped to handle everyone queuing to pay airport tax.

Perhaps we need some new legislation from the EU to mandate that all taxes and airport fees must be included in the fare at the time of purchase and that they cannot be increased after the purchase date. This would also stop some of the problems whereby some regional British airports and Riga (for Ryanair flights) charge airport fees directly to passengers.

Just had an email from Ryanair telling me how much the extra charge will be.

Paid with Ryanair cash passport which has virtually no remaining funds. Surely I would not have to reload the minimum £150 for the sake for what could be additional tax charges of less than one euro!!!

That's one of several drawbacks with the cr*p passport.

You don't have to reload £150. It's been posted on here how to avoid it if you dig around.

Will I be charged just the tax or an additional payment processing fee on top?

Well if taxes went down, you would expect an immediate partial refund. You cannot have it both ways!
