they are still awaiting confirmation from spain that the taxes will be backdated I think - although it is not clear when this will be.

Given the Spanish love for "mañana", who knows! ;)

Think the Ryanair website has been updated. Says cards will be debited with additional charge for all flights departing on or after 1st July even if booked before that date. Also includes details of how to cancel and list of charges.

Anyone travelling by Ryanair must, I suppose, expect to be treated with contempt as a matter of company policy. I don't see why there are any surprises in this story.

Nonsense. As another poster has pointed out, this happened in the UK when APD was increased in 2007. Back then nearly all airlines retrospectively passed on the charge to people already booked. I was charged, by Thomson non the less!

BMI sent me an email in 2007 saying they would collect the additional APD from the payment method used for the booking. Fine, I have no problem with that. However they didn't take it.

When we got to check in at MAN for a connection, not at our originating airport at ABZ, we were told very rudely to go to a BMI desk nearby and pay the outstanding APD or we wouldn't be allowed to check in.

By the reaction we got I think they must have had a lot of people complaining, moaning or refusing as they were so defensive it was almost like an attack.

I am amazed some maybe upset to pay a few extra quid for a country struggling, and when people will enjoy cheap food and drink all holiday. OK its a little harsh for big families on a budget, but I wonder what it will mean to most? a few less beers? These things happen in an economic crisis...

Ah well, if it makes holidaying in Spain that little bit more expensive I'll take my personal injection of funds into a foreign country elsewhere.

That way the Spanish economy loses a lot more than the piddling amount of tax this will raise.

    Politicians are so stupid.

Paid with Ryanair cash passport which has virtually no remaining funds. Surely I would not have to reload the minimum £150 for the sake for what could be additional tax charges of less than one euro!!!

That's one of several drawbacks with the cr*p passport. Fortunately you won't have to use one in a few months time. On the increase itself, it's inconvenient, but hardly unreasonable. The airline are not profiteering and the Spanish government needs funds. It's not practical for the airports to charge new bookings only as they do not know when people booked.

Nor does the VAT man, but there's no problem doing it this way for VAT. It's based on declarations by the business to the VAT man. The same could work with departure tax.
