I also seriously doubt they were trying to be cruel and were just heavy handed (personally i imagine they were holding it up in the air and something went wrong- I am NOT defending it or saying it's okay, just saying it probably wasn't intentional), but your son now knows why he absolutely must be gentle with animals.

It's already been said that one boy was swinging it around and the other (OP's son) was hitting it. They were being superheroes and the Guinea Pig was the bad guy. Unintentional? My @rse.

Everybody wants to think their child wouldn't be cruel. No doubt the parents of various notorious killers said the same things when people told them their kids were hurting animals. I'm not saying the OP's little boy is a future killer, that would be ridiculous with just this incident to go on, but cruelty to animals should not be brushed off as though it's nothing more than children playing roughly. It is very serious and the children concerned need to be told in no uncertain terms that it's wrong and they need to be supervised around animals wherever possible. Certainly they shouldn't be bought fresh victims.

A neighbour of mine had a very friendly and placid tabby cat and her youngest son used to pinch it's nose until it screamed with pain and her older son used to hold it down for him. They never did it in the house and she refused to believe any of us kids when we told her. I can still hear that poor Cat's screams in my mind and it's over 40 years ago!

Sorry you've had a horrible week OP, but animal cruelty really gets my back up.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

You poor soul, you've had a nightmare lately and you should be getting support from those closest to you and your not recieving it. I also have a child with special needs and when your are first told of this as a mother it is the most devistating feeling ever, its like someone punching you in the stomach. Take things one day at a time regarding the youngest child with special needs. I was told my son would never walk or talk and he can walk although has difficulty and he attends mainsteam school and with extra help from the school although while having mild to moderate learning difficulties he manages to keep up work wise with the class.Focus on the positives.
Regarding your other son l believe it was an accident he had an animal swung at him and its a defensive thing to to protect himself l think your brother was the one to blame there. Although l, like you would have been upset at what happened with the guinnee pig. And please dont forget everyone has been focused on your little ones problems and he is only 5 maybe the heavy handedness in school maybe down to him feeling a little left out and trying to get attention or taking his frustations out on other because he dosent understand what is happening in his wee life, believe me im talking through experience with my other children just be there for him, love him like you most obviously do and he will settle.People under estimate how children pick up on upset and when your stressed everything seems a hundred times worse.
Your OH is also stressed and like most things you fantasise about the past and how easy it was but in reality ex's are that for a reason and if he thinks any different get him to f*** and concentrate on the kids as they need you most.
In times like these get all the most positive people that love you around you. Good luck

Mummyofboys, I've been vilified by my initial knee jerk reaction, but still stand by my comments at how much it upset me.

I'm glad you took the GP to the vets asap for the inevitable, whereas a lot of less responsible people would have chucked it in the bin to die a slow and painful death, or hit it with a hammer to finish it off (Yes, that does happen!!!)

However, I do question your dad's decision to just buy his lad another GP, as if it's a new toy that has broken.

Another thread on here, asking about life skills for children, and I think one of my recommendations was "respect to pets/animals".

Please accept I'm not having a "go" at you, but at the whole of the people that think, pets are cheap, pets are disposable. No they are living creatures with feelings, and Sod's law I'll come back as a Guinea Pig in my next life...so want to get this sorted sooner rather than later.;)
