are house sales going through now?
someone I know is expecting to complete on Friday, and the buyer's mortgage is from one of the banks effected (Natwest I think), I'm following this thread on his behalf.
Luckily he's mortgage free and not buying anything else.
But the buyer could be in a difficult position.

There are far more educated guesses on The Register here

An anonymous poster who apparently works for RBS has seen the Incident Report and states that the first name on it (purporting to identify where the problem started) is not Indian.

    Fascinating thread on The Register.

couldn't find it, I bet the other posters didn't appreciate his contribution, looking at the comments most are UK based IT people who are not happy about outsourcing abroad....
  • Any updates on when things should be back to normal or changes as to what the reason was that caused this mess?

Does anyone know if the emergency cash offer covers those who have basic bank accounts? My husband is due to be paid on Friday into his Nat West basic account - if the problems are still ongoing and the offer doesnt help basic account holders we need to find plan b fast!!
  • One of my Natwest accounts has just been updated. Not fully but it's an encouraging sign.

For several days now I've been pursuing Natwest via their IdeasBank website over what they proposed to do about reimbursing anyone who has been adversely affected financially due to their house sale/purchase being delayed or cancelled.

Previously the FSA had stated that no one could claim reimbursement for extra out of pocket costs such as hotels or furniture storage. Natwest for their part have refused to answer my very straightforward question in this regard and just fobbed me off with the standard "Natwest customers would get any penalty charges refunded".

It seems to me that they are refusing to be drawn into any reimbursement outside of penalty charges and depending who is reporting on Natwests position, we seem to be getting mixed messages.

This morning I had an email from IdeasBank asking me to call them on a premium rate number (theres a surprise) as they refused to answer my general questions in a public forum. If I didn't know better this seems like a damage limitation exercise to limit their exposure to compensation claims and from previous experience with the Financial Ombudsman, I'm not convinced they're any better at protecting customers interests at least for now.

Suffice it to say after reading the article above it does suggest that anyone who incurrs extra costs on house conveyancing 'might' be reimbursed but I've yet to hear that from Susan Allen, Stephen Hester or the IdeasBank web site of Natwests. Are they frightened of committing anything in writing or being recorded live on TV as reimbursement rules seems vague at best for collateral damage.

Sadly this is an endemic attitude of banks in general that when they create a major problem, they DO NOT take full ownership of ALL the problems they have created but pass the buck to customers to do their leg work for them.

If I go overdrawn due to my PC crashing, I get charged immediately and I have to fix it pretty darn quickly as every day I'm overdrawn the bank will raid my account to charge me a penalty and/or interest. In this case, everyone affected is expected to do the leg work for the bank and to add insult to injury, I don't get recompensed for doing their job for them.

Perhaps the small claims court is worth a visit to wake them up as any legal precedent to the advantage of the consumer would certainly focus their minds. It worked before thanks to this web site and maybe it could work again and bring a balance to the one sided T&C's that banks enjoy at our our expense !

    Any comments anyone ?
