Tucked away in the business section on BBC

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18535060

... and it's on the 'breaking news' banner on the News homepage too.
  • This is one NatWest fiasco too far for me I'm afraid, I'll be away from there once this is sorted out. A cash deposit I made on Tuesday is now no longer credited, WTC hasn't appeared and a DD for my years' car insurance has plunged me into some kind of false overdraft. Can't get any money out at all because I'm shown as overdrawn and have been penniless since yesterday! On the bright side, getting used to black coffee quite well and toast is always good.
  • I have just read both news articles on the BBC and Sky and am not impressed at how it is worded "some customers andsome branches are having problems. It seems to me that there are a lot more than some of us affected. We have lost an entire days worth of business due to the Natwest problem. We also can not transfer funds for our rent. I am not happy!!

When I asked if that meant that my cheques wouldn't show up as entered today and she said it probably would but that she couldn't guarantee anything.

I paid NatWest cheques in yesterday, none showing up... NatWest cheques are usually cleared by next morning. Nor are any BACS transfers in showing.
  • i have been able to transfer money from one of my natwest account to another that i was NOT able to do this morning so they getting some where but very slowly i think, i am still waiting for my benefits to go in tho

As previously posted I never did get my phone call back at 9.30am - Ive phoned and they asked me to put a formal complaint in - they still dont know anything - the message on the phone states if you are ringing about the problem ring back in the afternoon!

I maintain the lady this morning who promised if the money was not in the bank by nine and my food shopping was not delivered "would sort it out for me" was just trying to pacify me as the second gentlemen I spoke to stated there was an email from 8. (something) am this morning to say it would be later and did not know how the other lady was going to sort it for me

Its my belief that a lot of families live week to week - day to day even - relying on money going into an account so the banks suggestion of use your credit card, why do you not have a second account elsewhere, can you not borrow some from a neighbour? and making it seem like its your fault you have no food etc is not on - I was "pleased" (thats really not the right word but I hope you know what I mean) to see that someone else has no food in their house, needs petrol etc as I was beginning to be made to feel by Natwest that Im some kind of "oddity" - they also stated that there was nothing stopping me going to the shops once the money was there - I just cant do that - and I doubt whether I can book delivery for tomorrow as Friday is always busier (and more expensive)

As I said before I had a food shop being delivered today as Im not able to go to the shops due to a disability - I also rely on money coming in to be able to buy that food -

    thats "helpful banking" for you!

I work in IT and luckily i bank with Lloyds but my partner banks with Natwest (but will be with Lloyds by Saturday).

The banks should have mirrored systems. Basically the way it works is all customers etc run on System A and the data is replicated to System B. When backups are due to take place the mirror link is closed and System B is backed up, the link is then reopened and the systems catchup and start mirroring again.

The hole point of running the system like this is foor this reason, if anything happens to the main System A then they flick a switch basically and everyone transferres to System B as the main source.

Ontop of this they have SLA (service level agreements) with there hardware/software providers and generator providers etc to guarantee this will stay up and running and if theres a problem it will be fixed in hours not days.

Ontop of that they would have generator backups that plugs straight into the building and monitors the power, if there is a power cut the generator fires up and kicks in in a matter of seconds so again there is no downtime.

Aparently from the conversations i have had with Natwest they don't have such systems which to me is vital when in this industry. They aparently atempted a system upgrade that was interupted by a power cut which has caused all this hassel. What they shouold have done was upgraded System B and tested it, moved everyone to System B and then upgraded and tested System A before moving everyone back.

Looks like Natwest dont invest in mirrored systems, generator backups and decent systems - I moved away from them many years ago when i realised they was not a Top Bank.

To be fair, no amount of testing on either system would help prevent issues in a power cut.

EDIT - I now understand exactly what you mean!!! Sorry - I blame the stess ;)
  • Hey everyone I'm new on here but been keeping an eye out for any stories relating to this issue. I'm an employer and use Barclays for all my banking needs that includes paying wages to staff via Barclays Internet Banking. Some employees who bank with Nat West have not been paid today whereas everyone else has.

Now don't panic; I've spoken to a friend who works for Nat West and also a member of staff who banks with them they have confirmed that Nat West are displaying their pay but can't process it properly until their glitch is sorted.

Nat West also said they could access their account and make any withdrawls or payments as normal and these will be processed on the system as normal when the problem is resolved.

Next question though is, bank charges for those that have or risk going overdrawn? I've no idea on that.

    thats not true.
I was supposed to be paid today.
Ive gone to the websites of the people who i needed to pay today, ie american express bill, and tried to make payment to them using my debit card. It gave me a 'payment processing error' and didnt complete due to problems at the card issuer (ie natwest). Tried the same with another bill and same problem.
I also need to pay a tradesman some cash today - how to do that then?
and if they have the audacity to say to me 'why cant you use your credit card' i will go mad - because you wont give me said credit card you bunch of idiots!!!
