If you use chocolate buttons you can push them into the banana without cutting it in half so the melty chocolate is contained and it's less messy. Plus kind of neat to have a chocolate filled banana and amusing for kids.

    1. Banana lollies: Peel them and then freeze them whole. Makes a kind of banana lolly. The kids love them.

    2. Baked banana: slice lengthways still in peel. Put into a dish, pour a little orange juice over them, cover and bake for about 20 mins.

Hello peeps. I don't usually post on the OS board (but I do lurk..!) but I wanted to say I made the banana tea cake today (putting in dessicated coconut rather than walnuts, as I didn't have any) and OH is happily munching away now on a big slice!

I tried a bit and it has come out nice & fluffy inside....I am very pleased as I don't bake very often. But I had 2 bananas left over and all the other ingredients so was happy to give it a go.

Such an easy recipie to follow too - hats off!

    Hi livilou,

Probably a bit late for you, but this older thread might help:

    freezing bananas

  • I have four very spotty bananas to use up but my kids don't like them very much when they are fresh and won't eat anything if they know that I've put the spotty ones in it. If I make banana bread they won't eat it for that reason. Does anyone have a fruit loaf recipe that I could sneak them into? I have the following in the cupboard:
flour, margarine, eggs, baking powder, cream of tartar, bicarb, sugar, honey, sultanas, cinnamon, baking apples, weetabix, muesli, lemon juice and mixed spice. Any contributions would be welcome as I am determined not to throw them out! I have thrown out so much food lately because they are getting fussier and fussier and the cruncher was last night when DD1 (16 and stroppy) wouldn't eat turkey steaks and chips and ordered a massive pizza deal thingie from Pizza hut for £22 - She paid for it out of her money but I was soooooo furious with her.

This will only be of help if you have strawberries, but you could use it in the future. Put halved strawberries in a bowl with chunks of sliced banana, cover with crumble topping and bake in the oven until bananas have gone to syrup and topping is crunchy. It is delicious served with icecream, cream or custard.

    Yum! YUM!!!

Peel, chop and freeze. Then, when the spotty banana incident has been long forgotten, resurrect as the base for banana/chocolate milkshake.

Or chop, dip in melted chocolate and freeze for a yummy desert.

Or, blend, add milk and freeze in yoghurt pots with lolly sticks for an ice lolly.

Make banana cake and freeze for future use, once its been long forgotten.

And don't pander to the fussiness, or it'll get worse! Can you get your kids more involved in the meal planning and actual cooking - maybe each child gets to choose one or two meals per week that everyone will eat, and gets to help make them. If food is made, but pizza bought in after the event, the food stays cold in the fridge and the child doesn't get breakfast/lunch etc till its eaten. Yes, they may buy in more pizza, but surely their money will run out sooner rather than later, and they'll get the message!

tell kids that if they are going to be fussy and can afford to order £22 worth of pizza they have to buy in some food shopping (of their choice) of £10 per week or whenever they can afford it-when they have done this a few times they will hopefully become less fussy-my mam did this 2 me when i was younger (now have my own house and kids) and i soon learnt you can only eat what you can afford!!!
