  • It depends whether you are a person who uses your SIM in a non Smartphone (really Ovivo should threaten to shut down the SIM of any user who does not consumer at least x number of MB of data per quarter as clearly they will no be seeing any adverts that pay for the network) as I suspect you may be or if you actually do some web browsing on your phone.

    If you web browse with an Ovivo SIM then you will soon realise the regular appearance of the ads and having to wait for the CONTINUE button to appear is quite a high price to pay for calls and texts and data being free. Also Ovivo uses Vodafone and in rural areas these days they have by far the largest number of unmodernised outdated 2G only (not even 2.5G) transmitters of any of the networks. I am also suspicious that Vodafone gives data traffic from Ovivo SIMs much lower priority on its network than that given to its own customers from occasions where I just have to wait and wait for web pages to appear.

    I've got a smart phone and use a decent bite of data every month but I rarely see an advert. I simply don't surf that much on the phone. It's the apps that use up the data. I use a browser occasionally when I'm out but only if I need to look something up. The ads are too intrusive for casual browsing. I did mail them to mention this. I've dealt with Ovivo CS many times and always very nice but when i said they might think about dropping the frequency a tad to encourage casual surfing and prevent people like myself, heading for app based time wasting, their reply was vaguely threatening. Luckily the proliferation of hotspots is coming along leaps and bounds. I use thecloud app and more often than not when in high streets or busy areas I'm online with them.

    As for the signal i feel for you. I'm in London but I pop out occasionally and rarely get any kind of signal!

    In my experience this is true. I recently had the opportunity to check an Ovivo sim against a Vodafone sim and found (using the same phone) that the a Vodafone sim was significantly faster. As I recall Ovivo gave 0.5 Mbps download and Vodafone was around 3 Mbps.

    Checked in 2 iPhone 4S handsets, even swapped the SIM cards between handsets. I won't be relying on Ovivo for a back up for data.

    O2 also give a lower priority to their own pay as you go customers and Tesco Mobile. Giff Gaff are given an even lower priority.

    I think it all comes down to if the data download speed is important to you, for me it is not except when using maps as a satnav as it no good to me telling me 10 seconds after I should have turned (GiffGaff is OK with this never had a problem using them).

    If data download is important I would be researching who is the best for this and using them I would not be relying on a free service.
    I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    I have just ordered a sim for use in a 'just popping out' smaller phone rather than lugging the Note II around. Not looking forward to the adverts but there are newsreader apps, email apps and other useful apps like Argos, Google maps, shopping apps and many others that use data that the adverts can't touch so I am thinking it won't be too bad for the odd page.

    I have removed an advert blocker app in preparation as I get the impression these will get you in trouble with Ovivo. Just hope the service keeps going now.

    In my emails today was a message from Ovivo saying they are increasing their Text amounts to 300 per month for the freedom package from next month :)

    Need bit of Advice. So if I ordered the OVIVO sim on a Freedom bundle. I will pay signing on fee for £20. Then I don't need to top up and will get 150 mins free, 300 text and 1000mb data each month?


    Is this correct? have a I understood it right?

    Although the 1000mb is only for November or first month or something like that ....it's regular limit is 500mb at the moment

    It's more then enough for the usage I need.. So I will order it. Get my O2 pay and Go pac code.. and get further credit.
